expanding the j3 memory and file limit

I have not personally tried it, but I remember reading posts by users who have indeed tried. They encountered the hard limit of 8,000 files.

Understand that the J3 pools the files together from the internal and the external flash memory. It can't do this separating of 8000 for internal and 8000 for external as all the files on both cards are pooled together and seen as one.

like stated in the manual the J3 is capable of handling 8,000 music/video files on the internal memory and 8,000 files on the external memory (additionally 4,000 "other" files, each for a total 16,000 music and/or video files pluse 8,000 other files).

I'll stand corrected if that is from your own personal experience. If you have an internal and and external card and you've personally stored 8000+ files, then I stand corrected.

Incidentally, the numbers you listed don't add up at all. 8000 + 8000 + another 4000 'other' files, each for a total of 16,000 and plus another 8000? So what exactly is the number? 20,000? 28,000? What is it?

Darkside - I would be interested in hearing from you or someone else here as to whether their own personal experience proves that the J3 can handle more than 8,000 total audio files. If it does, I would definitely be interested in upgrading to the J3.

Unfortunately, I'm only at 6500 music files, so I can't speak from firsthand experience.

But personally I believe the confusion is caused from "second language English" in the so-called user manual. I think it's a total of 12,000 files (8,000 music and 4,000 others) max, on both internal and external storage combined.

I know this is an old thread, but I just want to confirm that the J3 *IS* capable of handling over 8000 music files. I have a J3 32gb w/ 16gb MicroSD card and i have 8279 music files on it.

Attention everyone: Don't fret on this.

Almost all DAPs have a limit of stored files, including the iPod Touch. All players I've owned, including an iRiver H320, Sanca Clip, Cowon X7 all have these limits. Most higher capacity players have an upper limit, such as 20,000 songs for the Classic.

1.) I never timed the boot up, sorry. I just deleted all songs and did a reformat on the 16gig microSD card. I'm expecting a 32gig card in the mail today, and i'm selling the old card. However, i remember the first boot up after filling the j3 was pretty damn long, maybe a few minutes? Afterwards, the boot up time was a lot shorter (maybe a minute or less). I keep my J3 in sleep mode when not in use, so the only time i encounter boot up times is after charging or after transferring files.

2.)I'm using 2.23, don't know about older firmware. Note that the only reason i stuffed my j3 with 8279 music files was to see if the actual limit is indeed 8000. I had to delete all other files including cover art and use some lower bitrate files in order to achieve this. Usually my J3 is filled with maybe 6000 high bitrate music files and a few gigs of video.

quick update... just got my 32gig microSD in the mail this morning and spent all day filling my j3 32gig + 32gig microSD with music and video. managed to fit in 8,858 music files along with 10 gigs of video files w/ some room to spare. initial boot up after copying gigs and gigs of files was a whopping 3.5 minutes. Afterwards, each boot up took about 40 seconds.

Do you know absolutely for sure that you can access all of these files through the Music -> tagfield method?

I don't doubt that the Browser -> navigation method is very likely immune to any limit at all. It's just folder/file navigation like Windows Explorer.

But the tag database seems like it has a finite limit. There are several system files which are 24,000 bytes in length, and I've kind of assumed they're tied to the tag database... perhaps 3-bytes per file. And that would mean the documented 8,000 maximum for music files (and 4,000 maximum for other files) spanning both internal and external storage combined would be implemented, with these 24,000 bytes control files.

I suppose you could test this out, coming through Music -> [Artists] from the first artist and the last artist, and similarly with Music -> [Albums], and of course Music -> [Songs] as a way of proving that you had access to the "first" and "last" music file and all selected random files in between.

Anyway, being able to copy that many files to the J3 and get to them all with Browser does not convince me. I want proof that you can get to them all through Music and the tag database.

So far every single song i've singled out and searched for can be found through the various tag methods (artist,album,genres,etc..) and plays with no problem. I actually added some more songs and now the J3 lists the song count as 9275. Of course, there really is no way for me to be absolutely sure if i can access all my files through tagfield search unless I manually do it one by one, and frankly that's not going to happen. I'll be testing it out for the next few days and see if anything strange come up.

Well, maybe the max is actually 12,000... either 8,000 music and 4,000 other, or maybe 12,000 total/combined. And that could be 12,000 music!

If 24,000 byte control files is the limit, and it's 2-bytes per file, that would correspond to the 12,000 total limit.

Maybe the so-called documentation (written by an obviously "English is my second language" author, since the phrasing and level of detailed description is certainly not what we techies are looking for) simply described it poorly.

Maybe it really actually is 12,000 total max... files of any kind. Maybe there really is no sub-limit of 8000 for music after all.

I still think there's something significant about the fact that there are several system files of length 24,000 bytes.

I finally bought a 32 GB card last week and transferred most of my music library. I can confirm that you can exceed 8,000 songs total -- the Songs playlist now has 11,741 songs in it.

Using Windows I found that the total number of files was 12,666 (7,274 in internal memory, 5,392 on the external card). Both internal and external memory are almost full, but I have about 3.5 GB of video files on the external card, so the file count is lower.

I don't know when Cowon might have changed any file limits. I had firmware 2.23 installed when I first used the 32 GB card (because of the bugs in 2.24). For what it's worth I just installed 2.25 and noticed it seems to boot up faster (42 seconds instead of 60 seconds under 2.23).

just to see if i would reach some sort of limit at 12,000 music files, i deleted all my artwork and videos, but i managed to stuff 12,153 music files into my J3. I had to dig into the archives and use some old low bitrate mp3s i had in my old hard drives.
