Default Any recent review of Archos 5 (Android)?

Hey guys,

I'm currently looking to buy a new PMP. I currently have an old Archos 605 wifi 4G. The main purpose for this is to watch movies in high definition. The archos 5, 32GB (Android version), seemed to be nice on paper.

However knowing how Archos is and their infamous reputation of delivery buggy devices, I wanted to know how well the Archos 5 IT was working. How stable it is now with the latest firmware and all. A link to a really recent review would be great too.

Thanks guys.

The mods may want to move this thread to the Archos 5 Android sub forum. But anyways I think that some of the larger issues with the 5 have been resolved and with the addition of the OPen Gl it has pretty good graphic performance. For the price I think it is pretty much alone in its category.

Gadling has a recent review of the device.

Thanks for the info. I also hadn't noticed the android specific sub-forum for Archos 5.

If you would have checked the front page, and gone back a bit, you would have found the Archos 5 review, Part 1 & Part 2.

Hello TDS,

I read those reviews and they were the best I had found thus far. But seeing they were from febuary, and that Archos has released several firmware updates, I was looking for a more recent review of this PMP.

Anyway thanks guys for all the info however I'm still undecided...

For your intents and purposes, I'd recommend something entirely different.

First of, if movies are what you are after, why not purchase an Archos 7? the only difference between an Archos 5 and an Archos 7 is in the name.. 5'' or 7'' screen.

And you are right, for the price the Archos 5 & 7 are not bad deals at all. However, bear in mind that Archos has been busy making not one, but 5 tablets it's unveiling at IFA as we speak; so I doubt much time and effort has been spent improving their previous products. And also, the Archos 5 and 7 are somewhat outdated products, by tech world standards; and although no real competition exists for them at that price range, there might be vastly superior products hitting the market soon if you are willing to pay a bit more.

The Archos 7 is in no way similar to the Archos 5 except that they are made by the same company. The Archos 5 is a far superior product. That said you are correct the new Gen 8 that is out would be worth the wait especially for the Archos 70 which will be the same size as the Archos 7 but again far superior.

A quick search yielded the following result:

''Archos launched two MID, the Archos 5 and the Archos 7. The difference between them is about two inches and a few GB of storage'' - Mobile Wack.

I can't be bothered to search for more reports from more reputable sources, since you won't take it from me, for something I know to be true. The manufacturer's descriptions vary a great deal, but that's the only real difference.

The Archos Gen8 tablets will be released very soon anyways... meaning this tread is officially outdated if the OP is not all that eager to have a tablet PC in his/her hands right now.

I believe that G-Man76 was referring to the older Archos 7, and the NEWER Archos 5 IT with Android, as the original poster was asking about the Android version, even if posted in the wrong forum section, which itself is named wrong (should say "IMT" in the heading, not "IT"). If my suppostion is true, then G-Man76 is quite right. There ARE major differences between the 2 in question. Completely different hardware, as well as OS, as I'm sure you know.

I'm guessing that your Mobile Wack quote was discussing the gen 6 A5 and A7, which ARE pretty much identical, except for size (but probably isn't relevant for this discussion, as I've already stated). : )

No I am referring to the Archos 7 Android released in Feb of this year. It is a very different device from the Archos 5 Android released last year. The Archos 7 has no accelerometer, is running Android 1.5 rather than 1.6, has a slower processor, less resolution, no GPS, has only one flash drive option. The Archos 5 is a far better device but they both blow in comparison to the new stuff except that that the new ones have no gps...

Okay. My bad. You are referring to the Archos 7 HT. If folks were a bit more specific, confusion like this wouldn't happen.

Either way, you are still correct, and Herbertt is mistaken.

Yeah the naming convention is getting a little out of hand!
