Zune completely unresponsive

Well today I decided to plug my zune hd into my car stereo, and when I went to unlock the screen my Zune went black and became completely unresponsive. So I figured I would just hold down the power button for 10 seconds and all would be good again. Well that didnt work.

So I then tried charging it for a bit and attempted the reset again. Once again, nothing happened.

So should I put in a request for service?

Oh and I have a couple 3rd party apps on my Zune. Will that effect my warranty?

Try Recovery mode: Press and hold the power and media buttons for 15 seconds. The device reboots into Recovery mode (content is not erased, allows for firmware reinstall). This is a good option if you want to keep the content on your device, but reinstall the firmware.

you press the power/unlock button and the button on the left side of it with the five dots. the one that normally causes the media controls to pop up. hold them both for fifteen seconds.

My zune hd has been going completely blank a few times lately. First time, it freaked me out as I thought it broke. But basically the only solution is to hold the "Power" button for a very VERY long time. Keep holding it down till the zune logo appears on the screen. It takes a long time so keep holding it down.

So the question now is, should I send it in? And will having 3rd party apps affect my warranty?

So I called microsoft support and this is what the wonderful indian lady told me I have to do.

She said i can jumpstart the battery by charging it for exactly 30 mins, then unplugging it, and finally plug it back in and charge for 4 hours. I doubt that will work.

If not, she claims i can send it in and they will send me a "like new" refurbished one. It better be friggan mint, thats all I can say. Because my Zune has no dings or scratches.

Sounds like a typically useless bit of "assistance" from customer service people in India...can't understand why companies even bother using them...no offense to the Indians here but I've only had completely incompetent useless help from indian firms doing this business...
anyway...it's a shame for you as I had great support from someone in the US...

i held it down for a minute, nothing. i'm just going to send it in

XNA apps should not.

Yeah I'm thinking the battery is dead. It was just odd because the battery was working fine and then all of a sudden the screen just went blank. I do have the gameboy emulator on there, but its still an xna app so it doesn't really void my warranty. Nor would they know its even on there. And I think they just send me a refurbished one instead of trying to fix mine.

My Zune is kindof tweaking too.. Tell me how getting your Zune replacement goes out, cuz I've heard it takes like 3weeks-1 month to get your Zune back.

I had the exact same experience happen to me when I was using it with my car stereo. I don't think it is a battery problem, though it might be in your case. I got mine to work again by trying recovery mode.

Yeah I tried recovery mode. It didn't work. Its almost as if the battery shorted out because it had half of a charge when it died.

A short in a battery = snap crackle pop then hiss then blows shards of hot glass into your face and eyes.


This sounds more like a Tegra chipset failure.

It could be almost anything...there's nothing here to firmly say it is or is not the Tegra processor! In fact since nothing works at all, if it's not the battery then I'd suspect the rest of the power circuitry first.
