What would be the reason for my album art not showing up? I guess the other question is, by not having it, would that save some memory. Memory is always more important to me than having an album cover.

Default Possible reason for firmware upgrade problem

Probably firmware upgrade error occurs because of lack of free space on internal memory? Maybe player tries to unpack firmware components in order to calculate ckecksums and fails as threre is no free space for tmp files?

album arts only display with mp3 files id3tag v2.3 UTF-16.
An album art is usually 50-100Kb so it does not really take much space.

@lebellium:
A hardware upgrade's user get the library update issue with firmware 1.22, I asked him to tell me if his R0 was in MTP or MSC mode and to upload his mp3 on megaupload, if he answer me, I'll tell you.

He can't remember the file he put on his R0, they were 300MB more or less, before that he deleted the videos found on the player. He was using the MTP mode.

i am so dissapointed.
i bought the yp-r0 16gb black with 1.03 fw preinstalled.
everything went smooth for a few days until i dared to upgrade to 1.22.
i can not precisley recall what happened, but i got that nasty 99% bug and
after that the usual drama. no access, no chance to reset or install another, older, fw or do anything at all.

again the old saying proves itself. never ever, by no means, change a running system.
i have very little demand on features and fancy optical kicky.
i just chose a samsung product for its loudness level (every other crappy player is so extremley quiet due to eu-law restrictions. ridiculous!)

so i had to invest another 5,- Euro to take drive almost an hour to the market, hazzle with the people about the whys and whats and exchange the player. honestly... i am really pissed, yet happy i didnt had to send it to samsung and wait weeks for a replacement.

to make a long story short...
i dont want to go thru this again!
wich firmware is the best compromise without f***ing up the whole damn player?

and why arent we "allowed" to fully reset the player by our selfs, like, for example, you can do with apple crap via itunes?!?

Default Problems with fw 1.22

Hello ppl,

seems i got bad news (for me at last). I bought my YP-R0(16GB) yesterday at a big
retail store (MediaMarkt). Once i installed the Software, it said that there is a new
firmware available (1.22) wich i should install.
The player came with 1.13 (or was it 1.03?).

I updated through the software, which took more then an hour(!) but then seemed to work.

The device rebootet, passed the system check and was ready to go.
Then i uploaded about 11GB of music, mixed MP3, WMA and some OGG.

The upload of the music again took ridiculously long (for my taste):
I started the upload and left. When i came back over 2 hours later it still
wasn't done. Only after little more then 3 hours the transfer was ready.
(That makes roughly 1MB per second )

The device didn't show any more activity, so i unplugged it from the PC.
The player instantly showed "Updating Database" - which again took forever.
After another hour it showed 99% and didnt do anything more. I left it alone
for another 30 minutes .. nohing. I tried to turn it off - no reaction.

As the manual stated, if the player hangs, reset it. I did that.

Now the only thing it ever does when turned on is:
System Check (which passes) and then shows "updating [DB] database".
The Moment the DB-text is displayed, the "Ro"-Logo, which is usualy
animated with some reflection, frezzes and goes dim.

I tried several times, no use. Sometimes it shuts itself of after a few
minutes, sometimes it can be turned of, and sometimes only the resest
turns it off.

I'll take it back to the store tomorrow (can't get there today) and hope
they change it without giving me any troubles

The problem of the update library is a known problem by samsung, with firmware 1.22 they thought they solved it...instead some people like you get again this problem...
When you'll get the R0 back, I suggest you to do just two thing: first of all, turn on the player and set it to MSC mode (you should find this option in setting->system->pc connection), the second thing is that maybe the problem depends (also) on the quantity of file you put inside in one time, so it's better to put inside 1GB at time, it will take you some time but maybe will make the R0 work fine.

Thumb Up

I`ll definatly give it another try,

the look, feel, features and handling of it are realy nice imho.
And if it works the way you described, it would be perfect for
my needs.

Would you recommend any ofthe currently available firmwares?
Which one is most unlikley to give me another bricked player?

Default upgrading savely

yes first set R0 to msc mode, then format the player with its own format option. if the memory is blank, you will not get a library error after upgrading, because there is none.

thats what i did after it came back from repair (2 times!!) and it still workes fine. also copying more than 1gb at once is no problem with sw. 1.22. copied lately 8 gb at once with no prob.

Arrow Right

Well, here we go.

The store gave me a new one without any hassle, maybe because
i realy kept it clean, not a scratch, the protective film was still on...

Now i have it here, and i am hesitating to try it out

I switched it to MSC-Mode and formated, all media-folders are empty now.
This one has the same fw as the first one had, 1.03.
(Is there a description available what differs MTP from MSC?)

Interestingly, the Software "EmoDio" now claims there is no new fw available
(Btw. putting the 2 words "Emo" and "Dio" in one word is a capital crime imho!)

Should i really download fw1.22 and install it manualy by placing it in the root directory?

I don't want to put "another brick in the wall"

Yeay - so far, so good

manual update to fw 1.22 went smooth amd a lot faster this time,
about 5 minutes for checking the fw, and 5 more to install.
EmoDio took ~1h on the first player.

After updating to 1.22 i had to set the player to MSC again,
and i did another format. But now it finaly seems to work

Uploaded ~1GB of files at once, went WAY faster as well
then last time.

Edith says:

Everything seems just nice now! About 4 GB of music on the player and
even a ~1GB avi(Xvid) Movie. Sound is great, picturequality very good.

I'll keep myfingers crossed.

Concluder says:
Ok, after a few days of thorough testing, i think this is realy a "best practice" approach on the YP-R0.
I now loaded lots of music and several movies to the player, deleted some, copied more to it and so on,
no more hassle with the DB-Update.

The only thing i didn't try until now is to upload more then ~2GB at once to the player - call me a coward

1: Set to MSC
2: Format the player
3: Copy fw 1.22 to the root directory
4: Unplug player from PC - it reboots automaticaly
5: Wait for fw-check & fw-installation to complete
6: After another reboot, set device to MSC again & format again

Don't know if every step is neccessary, but this way it worked perfectly.

Thanks for your support everyone in here!

first of all, this webside speaks from the bottom of my heart ! why are ppl so fanatic about apple products to be the best and so on. I had my first HDD player 6 years ago from a no name brand but very cheap 20GB hdd. Everyone was stunned by that thing and called: Wow he has an Ipod how u got so much money from your parents???! After that i was like WTF and tried to explain what HDD player is and Ipod just one of them not the first one (thx to archos) and by far the most expensive one because of the design and brand. But they didnt listen to me, for them it was an Ipod ! Same as Iphone here ppl are paying so much monex to get the far best phone which must be the iphone they know it so well they would lay their hands into fire for the iphone to be the best... but they never investigate they just buy what comes to news! Whatever this was just a "hello" and nice site word got a bit too long. Now the problem.

I ordered one of the Samsung player for 60 € really best thing i can buy better than many 100€ player. and no touchscreen it has buttonsi can use while the player is in my pocket, sound is also said to be nice also battary seems good. Thats the reason for me to buy.

But i now read this and iam curious about what could happen. if i got 1.10 should i go to MSC mode and leave it there ? when i got another what is better to make 1.22 or 1.10 ?

and to summery this threat a bit:

1first set the player to MSC mode
2dont pack items on the player untill best firmware and MSC mode is applied
3before putting Firmware on player use the format option on the player
4dont use emodio (poor name) best to put the firmware file into root dict.
5after fw is installed switch again to msc mode and format again
6put files on player better slowly

ps. samsung u made some rly good hardware pieces but why are the firmwares so messed up? this mp3 player to be bricked that easy is a no go, same problem with my HDD samsung SP F3. I dont work on my mainboard so i have to FW update, warm reboot ( my falt) and bricked... Only because the firmware doesnt supported new boards, data is lost... support send me new HDD with OLD firmware.... WTF i have to update firmware again by myself. Think about it mr. Samsung ^^

sorry to sound like an idiot, but after reading about all these fw problems, I'm a bit worried, so I'll just ask and look stupid rather than regret it later:
You don't have to download all the versions of fw, right? just the latest one?

and uhh is fw 1.22 safe? after reading all these different problems, the first thing I got was to switch to MSC mode (whatever that is). but after that, is 1.22 safe?

or if it isn't, what is the latest version of firmware that is risk-free?

and I ordered an 8G pink r0 for 79.00 USD (it hasn't come in yet), but I'm not sure which country it's from. I suspect it's from the US, but it might be otherwise. does it make a difference on the firmware and stuff? I know the Korean ones are different, but besides that, if it's from Europe or something would there be differences?

I think 1.22 is safe enough. I never had any problems copying a lot of files (16 GB) at once. However, I only use MSC mode (in MSC mode the player appears as a mass storage device and allows to copy the files with any program). The only real bug is that the player sometimes crashes, usually in radio mode, and after switching it on again, it needs to do 'System checking'. Although the sound is very good thanks to the (battery-consuming) DNSe feature, I'll never again buy a Samsung player because of their restrictive firmware. Especially the MicroSD card support (the main reason I bought this player) is a joke: MP3 tags of files on the card don't appear in the library, and the player doesn't remember the current playing position when playing files from the card. Also playlists don't work on the card. It could be such a good player if the firmware would exploit the potential of the hardware...

@lebellium
Another bug found, at least at mine R0 but it is reproduceable - try it

Cover isn't shown anymore.

I organize my albums under "Music" in their own folders, each album one folder.
- Connect R0 to PC using MSC-mode.
- Copy songs of an album in its folder <name> under "Music".
- Disconnect the R0 from PC - DB-update - no probs.
- Start R0 - go to "Album" - search the album - everything is nice.

The bug
- Replace the album cover within the songs stored in the original directory on your PC.
- Connect R0 to PC using MSC-mode.
- Copy the new version of the songs into the album folder <name> of the R0. The songs are replaced.
- Disconnect the R0 from PC - DB-update - no probs.
- Start R0 - go to "Album" - search the album - no cover shown.

Workaround found
Before you copy the new version of the songs you must
- Delete the old version of the songs on your R0.
- Disconnect the R0 from PC - DB-update - no probs.
- Start the R0 (don't know if this is necessary) - turn it off again.
- Connect R0 to PC using MSC-mode.
- Copy new song version into folder <name> to R0
- Disconnect the R0 from PC - DB-update - no probs.
- Start R0 - go to "Album" - search the album - new album cover is shown.

The R0 is my first SAMSUNG-MP3 (honestly the second, my daughter runs an R1 with FW 3.06 without probs). Hmmm... FW 1.22 has its bugs but no probs with installing the FW or DB-updates.

Another bug I know is changing from microSDHC-card back to the normal menu to "Album" while playing music stored on the card. Clicking on "Album" sometimes stops the R0. It turns off automatically. Restart is no prob. Unfortunately, the error is not reproducable.

The R0 is a nice flat device but I still prefer my COWON X5 - sorry.

Regards, Rounder6

Why my R0, when disconnecting/removing it safely from USB (Windows 7) says: "Don't disconnect - Wait for connection..." and it reconnects after 1 second instead of (at least with the past firmware") disconnecting the device/restarting automatically with the library update?

I've to force removing the usb cable manually; with the safe disconnection he reconnects just afterward

Don't mean to crap out the thread....

But seriously! Samsung should be ashamed of themselves!

How many firmwares is it gonna take anyway!

If MTP is such a root cause why don't they issue a freaking update to remove it altogether!? & make the player MSC only!

This is pathetic.

For people like me this player isn't available in my country. I was thinking to get it from USA since my friend comes from there in a week!

I always wanted this player just seemed perfect but this nightmare issue makes this player a "Beta"!

And I don't even install any Beta software on my PC! lol

Samsung should be ashamed!

The problem isn't with MTP...there's other players from different companies...Cowon, Creative (their old stuff)....

Pretty sure those guys players didn't need to be sent to the factory for a RMA!

The problem is with Samsung firmware writers/coders...maybe they're just a bunch of kids from China! LOL!
