I spent about an hour running through this thread and trying to find some of the artists mentioned. I am just happy to find people that wouldn't give me blank stares when I tell them what I am listening to. The stuff on the radio, with a couple of exceptions, is pretty terrible IMO.

yeah completely agree. Personally i think underground/less comercial stuff has a more raw sound thats more experimental and i enjoy more. Currently listening to alot of Immortal Technique; he really makes you think and chellenges you, great songs

Yeah i really don't like much of the hip-hop that gets radio play anymore, it's just garbage a lot of the time. I much rather listen to an artist that makes me think and play the track over and over to get the details, rather than listen to someone talk about their new rims, chains, bitches or other stupid shit.

It's a shame that a lot of self proclaimed hip-hop fans have no idea about the underground/independent artists out there and it's not like it once was where everything was word of mouth. With the internet it's so easy to find info with all the blogs, Wikipedia, myspace/facebook artists pages and all.

It's funny when i talk to friends that are hip-hop fans but only know an artist if they have heavy radio play or are on the billboard charts. Giving them 5-6 albums to listen to drastically changes their perspective, and the funny thing is I've had friends come back months later with some sick new artist for me to listen to who i never heard before.

Can't believe I haven't posted in this thread yet. I've been buying tapes and vinyl since 84 so I'm definitely more of an old school/golden era head but still listen to new hip hop (mostly underground stuff). From about 94-99 I didn't listen to much hip hop coming out at that time so I missed out on a lot of great shit so I'm still catching up.

Some favs:

Run-DMC
PE
EPMD
Biz Markie
Big Daddy Kane
Eric B & Rakim
LL Cool J (old stuff)
Stetsasonic
BDP
KMD
Brand Nubian
X-Clan
LONS
De La Soul
Tribe
Black Sheep
Pete Rock & CL Smooth
Organized Konfusion
OC
Nas
Cyne
Binary Star
One Be Lo
PUTS
Blackstar
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Dilla
Slum Village
Scienz Of Life
Shawn Jackson
Fashawn
Y Society / Insight
Tanya Morgan
Crown City Rockers
Oddisee

And I'm a huge DOOM fan. I've been into his stuff since Operation Doomsday (well, since KMD but whatever). I've been the moderator of his forums over at hiphopsite for years now, and could tell you pretty much everything about Doom.

Great list, and i wish i was into hip-hop earlier but i got hooked on the genre with Wu-Tang in grade 9 (1997) and been exploring it ever since. I grew up on the Rza/Premo/Pete Rock style of beats with the heavy soul/jazz/rnb from the 50s/60s/70s sample style and i have a real hard time getting into the older stuff that run on simple break beats.

Glad to see another big DOOM fan. I've only discovered him about 5-6 years ago when Madvillany was released and then got all of his albums, mixtapes and colabs and hes just so damn talented.

I hope that Ghostface/DOOM colab album is released some day, i read it was on hiatus indefinitely.

It really depends as most people who like the genre are into the garbage on the radio like 50 cent, solja boy, lil wayne and other similar garbage. That's fine people like what they like but all you need to do is lookup the billboard top100 hip-hop/rnb chart and check that out.

If you would rather some more substance to your hip-hop over dumbed down club garbage i would personally begin with some of these albums:

Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Blackstar
Binary Star - Masters of the Universe
Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang(36 Chambers)
Nas - Illmatic
Organized Konfuzion - Self Titled
Madvillain - Madvillainy

Those are imo some of the best hip-hop albums ever recorded and a great starting point.

also try
Atmosphere - lucy ford
Common - Be
Outkast - ATLiens
Pharoah Monch - Desire
Talib Kweli - Eardrum or Beautiful Struggle
Murs - 316
Dilated Peoples - 20/20

maybe Pharcyde - Labcabin or Gym Class Heros - Papercut chronicles for something a bit more fun.

If you can find it the "Official Boondocks Mixed Tape" has an excellent sampling of artists.

The Ghost Dog soundtrack is also a favorite, there are two versions(US/Japan) that are pretty much completely different and equally awesome.

Nice! Soul Survivor is one of my favorites and easily one of the best of the 90s imo, and If you like Soul Survivor you will definitely like Blackstar.

I was horribly dissatisfied with the 2004 Cypress Hill album Till Death Do Us Part, it was a joke and just really really bad. When their 2010 album Rise Up was released i was skeptical but i really like it a lot, it's back to the old quality they were known for in the 90s.

I'm currently fixing tags and embedding album art to my Hip-Hop folder, not fun.

heh, i'm doin the same with my metal folder- i've reached up to O (opeth) after about 5 days and i've yet to start the drum n bass, ambient and trance & techno folders (i've got about 25- 30 diff albums in each, not lookin forward to it )

btw, i loved the nas and marley colab, one of the best after soul survivor, yet ... any more recommendations for Nas??

Illmatic his first album is his best album without a doubt, followed by It Was Written.

You're lucky to only have that many albums to do, i still have 50gb of hip-hop to go thru, and 150gb or so of other genres lol.

same here. pretty much good on art. I am also putting the release year on my folder structure to try and keep track of some of the full discographies I have. I enjoy listening to an artist from early to later years to see how they have changed.
