Default Cowon V5 RMAA Tests

My obligatory RMAA tests, no real surprises (except one).

Same rolled-off frequency response as ever with low-impedance phones:

The positive thing about the V5's sound I noticed immediately is its better stereo channel separation, better crosstalk than other Cowon players - or most other players I've tried, for that matter. It's pretty much on par sounding with the iPhone 3G in that aspect, if I remember correctly:

BBE v3 enhancements perform the same as on the S9 and i9:

Full results:
RMAA: Cowon V5 vs O2 - No Load, 16 Ohm Load
RMAA: Cowon V5 vs S9 vs i9 - BBE ViVA

hmmm...so dfkt, are these results enough to offset the:
- whale-like whiteness of the Cowon V5;
- oh-so-cute and clever icons and GUI;
- extra bonus of bricking the V5 when performing a simple format...

It *is* the best sounding Cowon so far, with the O2 being a close second. That's mainly going by background hiss (neither of both players hisses noticeably with UE11/SE530, contrary to all other Cowons), and the V5 wins with its nice channel separation. As far as frequency response, noise floor, and such goes, there isn't any audible difference between all modern Cowon players I've tested.

This is rather interesting, since the Cowon O2 was a Texas Instruments DaVinci-based player, while the V5 is yet another standard Telechips/Wolfson, same as all other Cowons nowadays. That makes me wonder why the S9, i9, D2, etc all hiss with my super-efficient IEMs, and the V5 doesn't. Maybe Cowon found out how to properly implement their TCC/WM audio circuits, after all these years?

Of course it doesn't matter how good the V5 sounds, since it's a horribly pathetic piece of garbage. It doesn't even manage to play consecutive folders, only the one it's in, or its sub-folders. And it has as horrible gaps and clicks between tracks as the O2 or the idiotic Hifiman.

This is just plain stupid...
um, year check Cowon...it's 2010...get it together.

More's the pity since you report the SQ to be [surprisingly] good...
