"A Strange Visit To mp5-Land..."


For those interested...an amusing and perhaps disheartening look at the state of mp3 players/PMPs in Hong Kong, 2010.

Specifically, these pics were all taken in Sham Sui Po, the district of HK famous for its technology markets...Interesting I think to see so many dealxtreme items in person...The iPod Nano clones were especially good copies in terms of looks but absolute shiite in the hand....cannot tell you how cheap and flimsy those things were...

Some notes:

- please, no comments on the crappy pics for some...I had to take them all on the sly or risk imprisonment [or worse...LOL];

- Adub: the pics of the Transcend SSD drives are for you to drool over;

- Enzo: the pics of the Viliv were for your amusement;

- the dog on the street was simply kind of a random pic;

- notice the No Photography signage...a moment of moderate irony I thought;

- I particularly like the name of one of the mp3 players: Brick mp3!

- the SoundMagic display rack is in honor of my purchase of the PL-21 for USD14$ [pretty good sounding imo];

- stand alone mp3 players nearly non-existent...all are video PMPs...none with names I recognize...most have horrid build quality, but a few were tempting...many actually had impressive video resolutions....

- FYI, global brands like Sony, Cowon, Samsung, Apple noticeably absent in Sham Sui Po...Those are only found in the local electronics retailers like Fortress...Sadly, selection is limited...No sightings of J3...And worse, prices are all 10-15% higher for these global brands over lowest USA prices...I was very disappointed...

WG: Thanks man! Was a great time...as always. Even better for my brother's amazing wedding. Simply off the hook...I actually have pics of Ferraris, Lambo and my brother's used Maserati Quattropole Sport [used...lol] if you ever wanna see em.

Fuze + RB = when Saratoga and other hardworking RB crew says stable version ready for V2... ;-)

Wow, great pics! I am glad though that you were able to report that there weren't great deals on the name brand mp3's we are salivating for back home here! At least that makes us (or at least me) feel better, cause if I went just by looking at your pic's I would be wanting to move to HK!

He's back already, and we went to B&H Photo in NYC the next day (Fri, 4/23/10). They wouldn't price match Walmart on the Sony X1061 deal, so I had to buy elsewhere, but lestatar got a decent deal on the Fuze he bought - his week wasn't all that bad after all.

PS: Dude, you should have bought the Cube dap, so you could have tested it out!!! Or, they also had Villiv PMP's - DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Popcorn: Thanks! Still, maybe consider moving to HK anyway...flat tax, moderate climate [though humid and cloudy a lot], best Chinese/Asian food around and taxis are dirt cheap....Otherwise, just like NYC!

Hey Electron...yes, I am already back, but thanks so much for the kind wishes!

Sadly, i brought nothing more exotic back than a pair of SoundMagic PL-21 IEMs I got for $14USD. They sound pretty good and at the price, I think a bargain...

Next time I am gonna get me one of them Brick mp3 players...

Yeah, that one would be really interesting, since it presumably should have BBE. Way more interesting than that idiotic "class A" Rocoo thing that uses the same housing.

TDS, Adub: So funny...I actually checked this one out. Never heard of it but design kinda caught my eye...GUI was pretty bad, but better than most of the elcheapo iPod clones I saw...Build quality felt decent...Sound: was kinda tough to tell...they only had like Cantonese pop songs and some Chinese opera on it...Definitely not to my tastes...LOL

Make a list...when next I go back, maybe in fall/winter, I will go shopping for you guys!

man I totally missed that thread...Had I known about the Cube, I would have looked harder at it...maybe even bought it [then passed it around ABi like a cheap...]

I probably could have haggled them down to like $45USD...Crap...next time!
