I've been looking to buy a Sony X1060 Walkman (in the UK) for the last couple of weeks, and everywhere I try seems to be out of stock, both online and in the main shops.
Does anybody know if this is because there's a replacement due, if there's just a temporary supply problem or if Sony are discontinuing the X Series...? |

Short answer to your question is that it has been discontinued...
I recently returned my S739 to Sony for a warranty repair. Unfortunately, it couldn't be fixed and I was offered an S545 as a replacement. I rejected it on the grounds that, amongst other things. it didn't have the noise cancelling feature (which was one of the main reasons I bought it) and, chancing my arm, said that I would accept an X Series as a replacement as it was the only Walkman in the range equiped with noise cancelling. Unfortunately Sony said that they couldn't supply an X Series because, after 8 months, it had been discontinued! Don't know if it helps but Argos have just reduced the 1060 (32GB) to £189.99, you're lucky enough to find one in stock!! There's none left in the Midlands, I managed to bag the last one in the Bilston branch. |

£189.99 is worth it - if you can find any. I paid £185 for mine last November.

Yes, it is discontinued - I just bought a X1060 for €200, and the shop assistant told me it was the last one, and "they won't have anymore". It is definitely time to go hunting for sales, now!

Sounds like it is definitely time to hunt down a backup X on sale somewhere!

Bad news, I love my Sony X, it has the SQ ,the looks and the size...no real weak points(once you get used to the interface).
Yes time to hunt down and get a backup. |

this is what I have been hearing as well, the X is no longer being stocked in europe, and perhaps a new walkman is due to replace it.

The newer A series looks to be a stripped down X series, at a cheaper price, bigger storage options and TV out. Not remarkably better

And the A series has a little bit smaller screen (2.8) instead of the fantastic 3.0 OLED screen on the X series. Also the A series has OLED, I suppose, but I don't like that the screen is smaller then the X series screen. (3 inches diagonally is IMO the smallest screen that is enjoyable to watch over some period of time. And the X series OLED screen is one of the crispest and clearest one I have ever seen, perhaps the best. (I hope the A series screen is as good as the X series one.)
And, BTW, there is VERY MUCH vasted space on the front of the A series, that instead could be used for a bigger screen. But the designers have got the last word this time, I think, because it looks stylish, but why use so much space that in reality is completely unnecessary on the front: That big "wheel" or circle, etc etc. BTW: As an option, Sony should again offer a bluetooth device. I don't think that is a feature of the A series, unfortunately, in spite of the non-optimal sound quality that BT still gives, of course. Last edited by mandersen; 04-12-2010 at 03:10 PM. |

I suppose now is the right time to check local shops for clearance deals on X series. Got X1050 today at a local retailer in france for 130 euro, 60 euro actually since I got 70 euro reimbursement for my dead fuze

Ive compared both the A and X oled screens side by side and I think I have to give the edge to the A series for a better quality screen, but the oled on the X is still a lot better than other players with non oled screens.
spec wise it is not a question which one is better, since the A series was never meant to replace the X.

When my X dies (and I hope it has plenty of life yet) I'll get another Sony.

I'd sure like to have one, but at least the two lower-end models I have sound good.

Ok. So first i hear that the X series is being discontinued so naturally i think the price for the 32 GB on Amazon that i have been saving for has dropped! When i go to check it out i see that the price is no longer just under $340 but now it is back up to damn near $370!
What gives? |

Makro in the UK are selling them as (not very cheap) clearance items:
16gb = £176 32gb = £235 |

interesting enough vobis.pl is selling the X-Series for a really discounted price on their website, ie the 16gb is cheaper than the 16gb A series now
16gb =599zl = 210 US 32gb = 999zl = 352 US both of thse are around 80-100 US dollars discounted. which could mean something new is coming and merchants and sony are trying to move old stock. So now I am wondering what to buy, a discounted X series or the new A series, hmm
