Default Zune HD - Real Capacities?

Getting a Zune HD 16 GB for 120 dollars, just wondering how much it can really hold after formatting, installed OS, etc.

I have a 80 GB iPod and it only has 74 GB of free space to start with.

what he said...just to give you an idea i have 1886 songs 99% of them are at 320kbps, 90 pictures, one youtube video (5 minutes) and Iron man movie...12.97GB used, 1.66GB free. 12.97+1.66=14.63gb

Note that the discrepancy here is due to how a GB is defined by storage device manufacturers and by the software. For the storage guys,
1 GB (gigabyte) is 1,000,000,000 bytes. However for the OS, 1 GB (gibibyte, GiB) is 2^30=1024*1024*1024=1,073,741,824 bytes. So 1 gigabyte = 0.931 gibibyte.

So that's why your 80 GB (80,000,000,000) iPod hard disk is only counted as 74 GiB by the OS.

After installing the latest firmware, you should have 14.63 GB of remaining space. Someone can confirm this number in settings-->about-->storage.

I forgot about reserved space (see below post). I believe I have it at 1%. So a little bit more than 14.63. Good catch =D

I have my reserved space turned all the way down to get the most out of storage and am currently sitting a little over 15Gb of usable space.

What is reserved space and how do I go about turning it off... Is that the social friend thing?

While your ZuneHD is plugged in, start the software and enter your pin to unlock screen if necessary so the ZuneHD says "connected" on the screen. Go to settings -> device and along the left side of your screen an option is "adjust reserves space" or something of the sort. In there, you can reduce it to 1%, however, when I did it, my Zune told me that all space was free (all of it was free because I had just bought it).

Oh and i forgot. Reserved space is the space that the ZuneHD leaves for "friend content". So I think it is just for If you use social. I don't, so it doesn't matter to me.
