The battery probably won't suddenly die, the capacity will decrease with time. Even when the battery holds a small charge, the player might be usable for a long time after that using an external battery pack.

I don't have a lot of faith in the usually quoted advice. I believe you will maximize life by not making a habit of letting it run completely down. The unit will shut off before the battery is completely drained, but there is no memory problem so frequent charging won't harm it. I think most of us will discard the device before the battery fails.

I believe the numbers I've seen are 300-500 times without what the manufacturer considers to be serious degrading, and then the battery gets more degraded (it doesn't die at once).
