After switching to the frequency-scaling only build, I haven't had any more ear-killer crashes. I switched back to dftk's build and had two more of these crashed in about 3 hours of playtime.. ouch! So I guess it's not caused by the frequency scaling but one of the other patches.

I'm using the eq and have the crossfeed enabled ("custom") all the time.

I also noticed the pops on the right channel - some kind of very sharp impulse noise. I suppose it is linked with the crashes.

Can anyone report as to how well this build is working:

r28426M-101031-sansaclipplus (FS#9305, FS#11304, FS#11577-Meier) - dfkt.zip

I'm tempted to install it but I'm confused as to whether it is stable or not.

There should be no issues at all with that r28426 build. Have been using it for quite a while.

If you want to try a slightly newer one, try Idroy's r28430 build with USB enabled. I haven't used my Clip+ much lately, and haven't built a newer one yet.

The crash- and sound issues were obviously caused by enabling HAVE_ADJUSTABLE_CPU_FREQ, which isn't enabled in both those builds.

A patch has been made to correct this problem, but although it seems to work fine with the Linux, it can only connect in USB 1.1 mode when Windows is the host.

I decided to just wait....I only swap content frequently on my one player without a card, so that one refreshes quickly anyways.

How can I find out what USB mode I'm in? I use Windows 7 64-bit and Clip+ with that Idroy's build and I haven't noticed any difference between USB plugged through OF and USB plugged through patched Rockbox.

The difference would be transfer speed, I believe....1.1 is old, 2.0 is current, 3.0 is just starting to appear on new computers. I'm not sure how big the difference between 1.1 and 2.0 is.

usb 1.1 has a maximum bandwidth of about 12 Mbit/s (but it often does not reach this limit although the hardware is faster in usb2.0 mode) and usb 2.0 does theoretically support speeds up to 480 Mbit/s but the memory chips in the clip+ are not fast enough to reach this speed.

I'm getting 3-4 MB per second with my Rockbox USB so I guess it's not USB 1.1...

that seems to be the native speed of the chips in the player. it is about the same file copy performance as the OF.

I'm not sure if I understand this correctly:

are the problems mentioned only with the customs builds? Can I just install the regular one from rockbox.org without those problems?

Yes, that's what I did. Version 3.7.

Yes, we are talking about custom builds. I have no problems with it though. Just stay away from those with CPU scaling enabled.

My problems have been resolved by wiping my old .rockbox folder and starting from scratch. I'm now using Idroy's non-cpu-scaling build with no problems

I'm still amazed by how cool a rockboxed Clip+ is Especially with the Ticker theme.

None of those bugs was affecting me, but a stable release is a stable release...so I'll update.
