I tried to google this first with no luck.
I am looking to purchase a portable video player. It is a 7" TFT LCD screen with 800x 480 pixels. It does have an out put for HD (1080) for viewing on a TV. So how good a quality is a TFT LCD screen itself ? Would a High Definition LCD Display, 1024 x 600 resolution be better? thx |

You will need to provide a lot more information than that, do you have links to the products you are trying to make a decision on?

7" Player :
http://www.ownta.com/jxd-a30-mp5-pla...ction-8gb.html "The HD display" player: http://www.aluratek.com/product_info...08&display=All And (or) if you have another or better suggestion, I am all ears. Mainly looking for a portable video player with 7" to 8" screen and $150 or less. Archos 7 series is out of my price range. Plus the Archos 'does' internet - don't need it in a player. Thx |

Both are cheap chinese OEM re-branded players - they suck.

darkside - so any suggestions for a non suck portable video player?
It seems the Cineplayer looks like a good player. Is not the iPad built in China? Not sure what you have about China, but seems that most electronics come from that part of world. The Archos seems nice, but is pricey. Plus I don't need all the extras (wi-fi...) just want a video player. Please- explain why you don't like these 2 items and provide other options. thx |

The iPad might be built in china, but the quality between that and these players is night and day. The iPad is the best then, these are trash. Look at either Archos (yes, it's expensive) or Cowon (the new V5 HD). Otherwise, there really aren't many good options nowadays.

I will look at Cowan and thanks for providing an option.
Oh, I was far from pointing any finger at China. In fact just the opposite. I thought that was you (pointing the finger with " Both are cheap chinese OEM re-branded players - they suck"). And of the 2 - I mentioned, when you say cheap, are you referring to the quality? What makes them of poor quality? If they are re-branded, would they not be of the same quality as a name brand? I have seen some decent reviews on Insignia (spelling?) and just recently found out thats Best Buys own. Are not those devises a re branding? I am just trying to find a good player, which is why I came to this forum. thanks. |

Found a Cowan V5 -
A little more than I want to spend and its 4.8" screen, which is about the size of my iTouch (the actual physical dimensions, not the screen). I was hoping for around 7". I went to the Cowan web site- but I did not see any other players. Lots of MP3 players though. What about the Coby brand? Found this - Coby TF-DVD7377 7-Inch DivX Compatible Portable DVD Player. Not only a DVD player but has a SD & USB slot. A perfect combo. Last edited by sethm1; 04-17-2010 at 02:10 PM. |

Coby is horrid garbage, same as Memorex in the USA. Bieng from the USA or china makes no difference, garbage is garbage.
And I meant that you we're pointing a finger at me, and saying I'm biased against most chinese player producing brands - which tend to be garbage. I'm not biased againt chinese made products - only the cheaply produced low quality stuff that you linked to, and what is nothing more than crap copies of well made products. Besides, you can't compare a well made player - like the iPad or touch - to a crap made player, doesn't work. You get what you pay for, and your trying to go the cheap route. I see you have a touch,............why are you looking at garbage and trying to start a flame war???

Yeah, after looking at the Coby it did not seem all that great.
I took the iTouch on a trip last year and the screen is just too small, which is why I am looking for something 7" or bigger. I came across a Sony DVD -DVP FX930 (& 730) which are DVD players with a USB slot. Problem is that Sony does not ship the USB versions to the US. Now if I can buy one off say the UK Amazon site, I would. Tonite I went to Best Buy. No actual video player. I did see a HP Dream Screen. It seemed OK. But reading the reviews on line are not all that positive. |

The thing about these chinese knock-offs is that they look awesome on paper, but the uis are buggy and slow and BUGGY and limited. But hey, they play MP5s...

Since the main thing I am looking for is a bigger screen then my iTouch.
What are your thoughts on the Philips 7-inch Docking Video Player for iPod see here: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-7-inch...567670&sr=8-47 thanks. |

Truth is, you'd be hard pressed to find a 7" display player for less than $150. Big screens cost money, and bigger screen=bigger battery=even more money. At the same time, very few companies are focused on devices of this caliber.
You would have much better luck saving up some money and getting a decent 7" Archos (or another, better alternative). Or, settle for a smaller screen. As for Chinese OEM's, I own one of them. It has a 4" display, TFT LCD, 20GB hardrive, etc, etc. And it's pretty bad. It has a battery life of 1-2 hours, plays videos very choppily, has a lot of artifacts on the screen, and has a confusing as hell UI. Also, many smaller US companies (like Coby), are also rebranded OEM, which means they come from the same company as the Chinese OEMs, and have the same shitty quality.

Thanks - I may end up with either a Sony DVP-FX950 or a Toshiba SDP935.
Both 9"screens, plays DVD's & has a USB Slot. The Archos new IT models do have nice screens but over my budget. |

Philips makes a 9" version that has a SD slot. As far as I can tell the 7 " does not come with a SD slot.
But the battery life is not as long as the 7" As long as I get one movie (2 to 2 1/2 hrs) thats fine. So is the screen quality pretty good on these Philips? I have an old DVD player which is not all the best looking screen or image wise. You can (well did - it broke not that long ago) even see the pixels- like an old dot matrix screen. When attempting to Google for more images of the Philips 9" Player with iPod dock, I came across another similar device - the iLuv i1166 player (it too has an iPod dock & SD slot) Prior to first posting I tried to Google for DVD Players with USB or SD - very little choices. Only the last day or so I now have a possible choice of the Toshiba (Toshiba SDP93S 9" Portable DVD Player), Philips (Philips DCP951/37 9-Inch Portable DVD Player with iPod Docking) or iLuv (iLuv i1166 8.9 Inch Portable Multimedia/DVD Player with Dock for iPod). Edited- make that a 4th choice- also from Philips: Philips PET1030 10.2-Inch Portable DVD Player with Car Mount Kit - it has a USB slot. Came across a review on the Philips DCP951/37 - "On one hand, the 640×220 resolution is pretty crappy " - closed the browser and now can't find the link to that review. I know seem over whelmed with choices. Last edited by sethm1; 04-19-2010 at 12:20 AM. |
