how can i test my f10 to see if i need a new battery, or if its something else? ive check the hold button, the battery switch, what now?

If the battery was dead (or missing), your player should still work via the AC adapter, direct or via the cradle. If that's not working either, then it might be something else than the battery.

so should i give up on it and sell it, or how can i further my testing? one day it was working, then i stopped using it for a couple of months and it wouldnt turn on

You'd probably need to open it up, at the very least. And also get a new battery to verify that it is, in fact, the battery. Whether or not that's worth it is really up to you.
Selling a non-functioning F10 on eBay will probably only fetch you about 20 dollars. So keep that in mind, as well.
