Default Could MSC/MTP be added via firmware update?

So could it? They could be really quiet about it so all the mainstream consumers will continue using the product as a "just works" device and the rest of us can have the open ended device we want.

It doesn't matter if it could or couldn't, because it won't be.

Yeah I'd probably drop dead from a heart attack if it ever happened, but technically it's possible.

Sorry, but this issue has been discussed quite a few times already, and it'll never happen on a Zune - PERIOD!!! The Zune's are all ZTP, and that's it.

It should be technically possible since some media players have a dual connect mode. But it's never going to happen since we don't actually own our Zunes.

I know it will get said someday so here it goes...

The Zune technically uses MTP but it makes a handshake with the software so that it will sync. So it's not a special protocol. Just an encrypted sync.

Rather than MSC, I would prefer to see it get rockboxed like one of the Toshiba gigabeats but I doubt that will happen either :/

If you want a device that works the way you want it to work, not the way Microsoft forces you to use it, it's simple - get another player. They are making more money with their heavily locked-down approach, and they're not going to give up on that easily. Of course they could implement MSC or "normal" MTP, but they never will.

Maybe there will eventually be apps like those various iTunes replacements (Doubletwist, YAMIPod, Sharepod) for the Zune, since theres always certain people being pissed off by patronizing, limiting monocultures.
