Default Zune won't charge unless it's on?!

If the unit is off and you plug it into the wall charger, it turns the unit on.
If I go ahead and turn it off and let it charge overnight, I notice that the unit
didn't recharge at all.

Anyone else notice this? Seems wasteful to require the unit to be on to charge up.

When it barely takes any power at all to stay on without it doing anything, it's not that much of a waste. It might also help with the trickle charging.

I noticed this as well after the first night and thought it was odd, so I stopped fully powering it down and soon realized there's no practical benefit to doing so in the first place. Sleeping saves just as much battery.

Little tip you can put it into standby mode while plugged in.

What exactly do you guys mean by sleeping? If you are referring to the lock screen button at the top, all that does is turn the screen off, and music keeps playing. Which means the battery continues to drain.

^ That. It'd be silly to leave music playing while you're not using the device anyway. If your Zune is doing nothing and you turn off/lock the screen, it'll go into a powersaving state. You can always see by yourself. Just make a mental note of how much battery is remaining when you go to sleep, and check it again when you wake up. You'll see the battery remaining hasn't budged.

This is actually one of the things that bugs me the most about my ZHD.... None of my other electrical devices (phones, laptop, w/e) requires the device to be on to charge, it's pretty ridiculous. I like to keep my devices off whenever not in use, it'll just increase the life of the product/battery (even if just a minimal increase, it's nonetheless an increase).

Really? My netbook (like a laptop) charges with it's power off. So does my dad's laptop.

Yea, but what about other PMPs and cell phones? Samsung P3 and YP9, Sandisk Sansa, both have charging displayed, sort of on, most cell phones have a battery display while charging, sort of on too.

Seems like a very small problem to nitpick about.
