I just ordered an S9, particularly because everyone raves about the fantastic 3.3" AMOLED screen. Top that with Xvid support, and it's basically the perfect device for videos.
...until I read about OLED in the sunlight. Is it really that bad? To be a little more descriptive, I can see my Samsung P2 outside with the brightness at about 6 or higher. I even read that some find the S9 screen useless outdoors. Does this refer to direct sunlight, or any indoor light source as well? Because after reading about how the S9's screen kicks so much ass, this is a huge turn-off... |

I'm pretty sure it's called AMoled because it's optimized for daytime. vs PMoled for night, and plain oled for normal. Not sure though. Anyways, I can tell you that outside you'll need to up the brightness to really see it. or go in the shade. And even then, it;s kinda washed out. not amazing, but it works. imo even lcds are better in bright sun.

it definitely sucks under direct sunlight or even in just naturally bright areas. on a cloudy but rather bright day i couldn't see anything on the screen except outlines of the album art. oh well, a small price to pay for a great player.

I think all screens suck in daylight.
It's which ones are usable in indirect sunlight. |

Its not just the LCD/LED/AMOLED/OLED its also the glass on top of it that really throws out the glare.
But heres a solution: Don't go outside.

AMOLED = Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode PMOLED = Passive Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode PMOLED & OLED is same. So basically just two kinds of OLEDs in mkt - AMOLED & plain old OLED. As for the sunlight question - lets just say that you won't enjoy watching videos in sunlight but your S9 will be quite useable for listening to music - you'll be able to browse through your library or tune into radio. |

It's fine on full brightness for general use, certainly not as good as in medium/dark brightness conditions where it really does shine. Movies in direct sunlight wouldn't be that fun.
It's worth it for the lovely colours, crisp details and great battery life of it though.

In Europe we have 24OLED, also called MILITARYOLED in the USA.

AMOLED undoubtedly has the best refresh rate and looks gorgeous! May be you need to adjust the brightness..why would you watch a movie in direct sunlight?

Well, you can try this tweak I made, so it can go to 12 brightness, it works really well.

first, welcome to the cowon, especially the s9, community steel!
i'm new here, too, and i also had my gripes before receiving my 32gb titanium s9. and i want to stress "had". as stated, indoors 24oled (lol) shines and i use the darkest setting to preserve battery. yes, when i go outside with this setting, i cant see much and even less in direct sunlight. but i run ultimate aero g2 and put the brightness-button on my main-paige and so i just quickly turn it to 4-6 and everythings fine, even in direct sunlight. i also wouldnt watch a movie in the sunlight, but i wouldnt do that on any screen, so its no amoled-specific problem. i wish you much fun with your s9 and recommend trying out ultimate aero with which the s9 gets even better. |
