From what I understand, they gave the Clip+ a flawed attempt at gapless playback (sometimes it works, sometimes you get clicks between tracks). In my view, it's not really gapless if gapless playback is inconsistent.

From the Sandisk site:

• Ensure your battery is > 50% full
• Extract the .zip file into a folder on your computer
• Once extracted, drag the two files to the root directory of your Sansa Clip+
• Disconnect the Sansa Clip+ and let it begin the firmware update
• Once it finally finishes doing its update, it will turn itself off
• Turn the Clip+ on Select your language and region preference

• Once its back to the main menu, head to "Settings" > "System Settings" > "Info", and verify the "Version" is now 01.02.15

Be very sure about the charge level on the battery. If it fails during the update it may be unrecoverable.

Last step: Change the USB setting back to MSC or MTP (whichever you prefer), do not leave on Autodetect (aka Autodefect.)

Sorry, I don't know how to do that.

Also, my current version is 01.01.09A. Do I have to update to each newer version or can I just jump to the latest?

Jump to the latest. You're not really upgrading like a PC, you're actually wiping the entire firmware area and flashing a new firmware image on top of it.

You can go directly to the current version with no intermediary steps. To set your transfer method to MSC or MTP,

Main Menu=> Settings=> System Settings=> USB Mode.

Pick the one you prefer. Avoid Autodetect as it will sometimes change without notice and cause you not to be able to see the files transferred in the other mode.

What's the difference between them?

MSC treats the player as drive letter, MTP is needed for protected (DRM) transfer and MTP enabled media management programs such as Windows Media Player to work with the device. Either mode can be used to drag and drop content onto the player. Check the Glossary For Newbies in my sig for more info.

It's a good read and a great reference for when there's no one around for quick questions.

Your guess is as good as mine. I think that right now the SanDisk devs have their hands full with the new Fuze+.

If there's something about the current firmware that you aren't happy with, then adding Rockbox would be the best upgrade.

The timing is right--SanDisk originally was coming out with updated Clip firmware every quarter, and it's been awhile since an update came out. Having said that, it's unclear what major changes are needed at this point (as versus tweaks) given the maturity of the player, and who knows if any sort of revision is on SanDisk's radar, given that the current firmware works pretty well.
