My Gigabeat f40 got formatted by mistake. Ater formatting it showed panic mode on the screen and then went dead. It wont turn on now, if i try to turn it on, it gives a black screen and turns off. I removed the hard drive to try the other boot without hard drive trick that didn't work. Any ideas?

If the re-format was the root cause, you should be able to fix it by 1) opening up the player, 2) removing the HDD, 3) powering up the device, allowing it to fail and then connecting the USB cord and then 4) reconnecting the HDD. This should at least get you access to the HDD to reformat it to FAT32 and re-adding the GBSYSTEM folder back.
Going on your post, I'm not sure if you tried this, already?
