Default SanDisk Sansa c140 Not working right, Corrupted, Behaving strangely

Just some info for people who are experiencing strange problems with their SanDisk Sansa c140 (1GB).

Try updating the firmware using the firmware update utility, even if the firmware is already updated, or your computer no longer recognizes the device when you plug it in, or the screen on the device doesn't even turn on.

The file name for the firmware update utility is usually: c100_1.0.005a_FirmwareUtility.exe
As of writing this, you can do a Google search for that file name and you'll find it uploaded to several different sites.
If you don't get any results, try searching for just sansa 1.0.005a instead.

Here's how I update the firmware in XP:

1. Hold down the Select button (the center circle button) then connect the player to your computer while continuing to hold down the button.
If the New Hardware Wizard starts, permit it to install the device automatically and give it a couple minutes to fully complete.

2. Run the firmware utility (c100_1.0.005a_FirmwareUtility.exe), click Update when given the option, then wait for the update to complete.
If the Update button is greyed out (not clickable), you may have failed to hold down the Select button on the player properly, or the New Hardware Wizard may have failed to install the device properly.

3. Safely disconnect the player (as you would any other USB storage device).

Note: It's common for the player's USB cable to stop making proper connection after its been used for a while. Take this into consideration if your computer isn't recognizing that the device is connected in any way.
Usually you can just press upward on the connector (where it plugs into the player) and it will make proper connection, but you'll have to continue to hold it until you're finished updating the firmware or transferring files (or whatever it is you're doing).
