Well to end this little "talking to myself" saga with some closure: Making this decision has been driving me insane but I've pulled the trigger and gone for a Little Dot MK V; it had some great reviews and I got a good deal (£135 + p/p).

I know most say tubes sound better with HD650 but I wanted to start off with a solid state amp. I'm going to be moving about a fair bit in the next few months so something less likely to break seemed to make sense (I'm clumsy and could just see myself breaking the tubes) I've heard they take a bit of taking care of.

I'm sure I'll get a tube amp later down the line once I'm settled somewhere then either sell this or keep it to have options. For now I've just ordered the HD650 and they and my amp are on their way - can't wait! :-D

Thanks for all the advice on this thread!

Congrats, I'm sure you can't wait Is it the Little Dot MKV dual mono solid state, if so I've read nice reviews about it paired with the hd650s.

Hey WalkGood,

Thanks! I now have that warm glow that can only come from spending a lot of money on something you didn't need but really wanted.

I didn't find anything during my reading-up on this amp that suggested more than one version of the Little Dot MK V, so I guess it's the same as what you're referring to.

This one was listed simply as "Little Dot MK V" though:

From reading about them online, it seems like the HD650 would be the polar opposite of Grados....so since you enjoy the Grado sound, I will be curious to see how you like the HD650. Either way, congrats on a rig a lot of people will envy.

Marvin,
I've been deliberately buying headphones that each offer a completely different experience for my music collection -

Phonaks
ATH-M50
Grado SR125i

All very different sounding phones and I like that as it gives me three different music collections in essence. The HD650 will be a fourth I hope.

I'm the same with music itself - I love variery. I have rock, pop, jazz, blues, rag, classical, electronica, hip hop, folk, prog rock, balkan style folk, reggae, dub, tropicalia, soul and countless other genres in my collection.

I on the other hand have no doubt that you will immensely enjoy the HD650s; they can go up against phones that cost more than 3 times their value and hold their own.

Walk Good, I read the first of those and found a couple of other reviews you didn't list, also saw a few forum posts about this amp and HD650 together going down a treat. Will give the others a read tomorrow. I think it was the first review that really sold me on it!

Sounds like a good plan Eddie, having the variety available.

Interesting how it says the extreme upper treble response is good, but the lower treble/upper mids are somewhat muted.....so they would certainly sound dark to me, since I don't think I can even hear anything from the upper treble range at all.(I'll have to try some test tones with the Grados to see)

It sounds to me, after reading that, like my PX100's are an example of the "house sound" that is fully realized by the HD650.....because I find the need to boost the upper mids on my PX100's a little bit....or maybe I need some of that Cardas oxygen-free pure silver cable for them

I would like to try them, but I don't know anyone locally that has anything of quality like that. I'm surrounded by people with little white buds sticking out of their ears here.
