Appologies if this has been raised before,i have looked, but so many threads.
All my music is tagged and has art embedded with Tag&rename, average size 400x400,they look really good full screen on my Ipod touch, but jagged and distorted on my S9,some of the text on album sleeves are un readable. Why is this ?,the screen is supposed to be so good, incidentally photos break up badly when using the zoom function ,again not so on Itouch |

What's it look like on your computer screen? The S9 has better resolution than the iPod, so if the artwork isn't all it could be, then the S9 will show it's flaws.

On the computer and on the ipod it looks fine ,but not great on S9.
I have tried putting some high res images on to the player ,look fine until i use the zoom function ,then all the edges are blocky. |

It's the zoom feature. I couldn't say why, but it zooms 'wrong', and images loose detail. a couple of friends have picked up on this too while playing around with mine :/

The S9 is not good at re-sizing images, something many hope will be sorted out in a future fw release.
Might be a bit tedius, but if you resize all your album art to 272x272 it will display perfectly.

There are lots of algorithms for zooming images. It looks like the S9 uses "nearest neighbor" which is the fastest but sometimes causes jagged edges and aliasing artifacts.

The pixelation is known as aliasing and happens as the others said when images are resized.
What firmware are you using? The more recent firmware releases use alright anti-aliasing when resizing images. (Not great, but much better than the pixelated older firmware versions.)

yeh make the images smaller however if you just use your pc tag files it is a bit annoying most of my art is huge like 2048x2048 and it get horribly pixelated and takes a long time to update the image on song changes but it looks good when on a 52" TV :P

Seems such a waste ,great screen for video ,but picture viewing and album art forget it.
One up for the ipod ,your move Cowon. |

On the other hand you only see the album art for a few seconds before the display turns off. It's not like other players that have the option of keeping the screen on all the time.

Uh, no, I sure didn't see it because it wasn't on the screen. The S9 can only display five entries at a time in the options.

Is there a way to get it to dim the display after a few seconds like it normally does before it turns the display off? The Creative Zen does this and it saves a lot of battery power yet still lets you see the screen.

I believe the default option is 10 seconds and "Always On" is visible when that is selected, so it would have been visible the first time you used that option. It's pretty easy to miss though.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an option which dims the screen after a time, but I'd like that too. It would make more sense if it operated that way. If you want to conserve battery life, you could set brightness to 1 if you can use it when dimmed. (Outside of daylight and bright lights it's quite usable at 1 for me.) They've been pretty responsive to people's wants so perhaps they'll put it in if enough people ask for it.

Oh, "Always on" i.e. "infinity" is above 5 Sec, the shortest value. Another case of S9's clever UI. |

album art display on the S9 is horrible. there should be no need to resize all my artwork to a ridiculously low size just to make it look good on the S9 but nowhere else. like most FLAC collectors i don't embed artwork into the files but rather store them separately with standardized naming conventions (front.jpg, back.jpg, etc). there is no way i am going to spend hours reorganizing all of that for the sake of the S9. this is definitely an area where the iPod excels - images are displayed properly no matter what size the artwork is (provided it's not uber tiny).
oh well ultimately the whole point of the S9 is the unmatched audio quality so i can live with it, but i'm sure it doesn't help win over many iPod users... |

steagle, put claw or the dark evolution beta on. They let the resolution be higher, and DE especially only looks good with 400x400 + album art

Dark Evolution is here if you're looking for it on ABI. Not really on iaudiophile, so unfortunately cant link you to it there
