Dave, do you know if there will be eventually 3D support in XNA for Zune HD? And if not, how do I go about contacting Microsoft about developing a 3D game?.

Good enough to make a girl with an iPhone say "That was awesome" after I finished a song on AudioSurf. I got tapped a few times today by people just to say that the game is cool.

I've never been a big fan of playing games on an mp3 player, just because of how fast it eats through the charge, and I value my music more than playing games generally. I think I'll dig out my Zune out more often.

Unlike the Touch, the colours are brilliant and dark, so I don't have to crank up the brightness to play. The P2 had the same problem, and generally wasn't a very good gaming device. Of course, I didn't buy it for that reason...though I also didn't buy it to have the headphone jack break on me 6 months in.

Are you playing on public transportation? Not that I want to attract attention

Yeah. It's tough not to attract attention, even if you're not sitting by anyone. The circumference of people around you will see you shifting your hands, and will see the sexiness that is brilliant colours contrasted by dark blacks. People have seen racing games on the iPod, but nothing like Audiosurf. I don't think people know that it correlates with your music initially; if it looks awesome enough to attract people's attention, just wait until you let people get their hands on it. Not that I let strangers get their hands on it, but friends sure.

I don't think Microsoft will ever beat Apple in sales, so people spouting numbers off are stating the obvious. I don't see what's wrong with making a fine product and making enough profit to use this as a stepping block to something else.

Oooo the Piano app would be very handy for musicians wanting to transcribe a melody as they hear it. I know I'd get a lot of use from it.

The reason is pretty simple, there are more stupid/dumb/gullible people who will fall for anything in this world vs. smart/educated/make decision for themselves people.

There are also a lot of people who prefer an all-in-one devices that is competent in all aspects, rather than a device that excels in a few things, while ignores others. I prefer the Zune because it's outstanding at audio and video. But for slightly less capable AV, the iPod Touch is a solid product if you want more apps and a better browser.

Also, it falls on MS to advertise the product. Many consumers don't even know what a Zune HD is. Every time I turn on the TV, I'm bombarded by Apple commercials, which do sometimes feature the Touch.

Audiosurf looks much more impressive than taptap, and it uses the accelerometer for control. But yes, you use your own songs.

Haha, just watched a vid of Audiosurf on Youtube.
Looks AWESOME. Waaaayyyyy better than Taptap, because all you do (of course) is tap. BTW, can you separate the songs in your music library and the ones you play on Audiosurf?

Well, kinda. There's a spot labeled "Recent Songs" that seems to hold every song you've played, or at least most of them. You could also make a playlist of songs you want to play since it has playlist support.

We plan to keep evolving XNA, but the 3D components are limited in distribution right now. Email me (aussie@zune.net) if you have a killer app concept you would like to develop.

Two points:

1) Devices are still selling out in stores. When you don't have an unlimited marketing budget, you need to choose when to market and when to dial it back. We're doing a bunch of marketing right now, but very targetted in the leadup to Black Friday.

2) Apple has the device sales volume to sustain a very, VERY substantial marketing budget. Don't confuse Microsoft's ability to bring a very, VERY substantial marketing commitment to a product like Windows (which generates very, VERY substantial revenues), with the certainly smaller marketing commitment we're able to make with Zune. I know our marketing guys would tell me they're punching above their weight, but assuming we can bring an iPod-sized marketing campaign to market isn't realistic.

Cheers, Dave.

In Germany they advertise the iPod/iPhone constantly. And guess what, they always advertise with their appstore.
