EDIT: Never mind, a co-worker tried to fix it and now there is smoke coming out of my D2; if you continue reading, do so purely for the lulz
I am a Linux user; I obtained some music in .M4A format and after it was already on my D2, I realized the format was unsupported; I used Sound Converter (on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic) to convert them to OGG files; after doing a clean unmount (I'm aware the D2 is terrible for write-caching as I've had it bricked before when a Windows user copied files from it and then yanked the usb cable without doing a Safely Remove Hardware) Next time I turned it on, the screen froze at about 75-80% through the "Scanning D2" phase; there is no SD/SDHC card present. Since the D2 will not power all of the way on, I cannot mount it onto a computer. The only Windows machines I have access to are at my workplace and I do not have administrator access. Frankly, I do not like the D2, but as I live a Windows-free lifestyle, I require an MP3 player that works with Linux as a removable hard drive. For this reason I've ordered a new D2+ to replace my aging D2. The problem (aside from having no music for a week while Newegg ships my new player) is that I do not have a backup. Is there any way of saving the files that were stored on my old D2 without access to a Windows machine? 2 of my computers are running Ubuntu 9.04 rather than 9.10. I hate Karmic and suspect that it was the OS that bricked my D2, since nothing else works in Karmic like it did in Jaunty. If there is a Linux-compatible fix, I'd prefer to do it on one of my Jaunty machines if possible, since I trust them. EDIT: also, I have tried using the reset button by the USB & power cords, it does nothing that I can tell without being able to turn the D2 all the way on Last edited by Citizen Bleys; 11-07-2009 at 11:20 PM.
