Default Firmware Update 2.28 US Working
Yes, it indeeds works! Here's few more details..

1. It reboots twice when updating. When I saw the second Samsung logo, I was thinking like "Shxt, now I am bombed" because I thought it's now in endless reboots due to abnormal update. But no, it works fine after that!

2. Firmware ver. shows as it's 2.28 US.

3. Language support works too. Now I see about 15 languages. (Chinese, Chinese (T), Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Thai)

4. On-the-go list works as well!

Now, I am very excited that I can see Korean/Japanese!

I'm going to hold off a bit for more confirmed results. Here's why I'm still a little concerned:

My Dell Axim X51V Pocket PC has undergone several firmware updates, each of which were dependent on it's immediate predecessor. The third firmware update, for example, was only installable if the user already installed the second firmware update -- Going from the first update straight to the third isn't possible.

So if system version 2.28 completely replaces US version 1.0x, will the pending official US firmware update still install properly if the user has already installed a new (non 1.0x) update? This, of course, would be a major oversight if it didn't, but until I hear official confirmation from the Samsung US market (or until they offer a backup Version 1.0x), I'm going to wait.

BTW everydae, is there is a certain directory that the Z5 Update needs to copied to in order to show up properly on the device? The instructions seemed a little vague here. Also, did the update erase all your previous files?

The standard upgrade or the special one for the Z5F that includes a format???

Ok, here's exactly what I did..

1. I copied all the files (Music, Picture folders) to my computer for backup.

2. Formatted the player.

3. Copied Z5update.dat (the one from the linked zip file) to root folder of Z5. (i.e G:\)

4. Plugged off USB cable. It turns off itself if I remeber right.

5. Plugged back USB cable. Now it turns on, and starts update procedure. It asks you whether you want to update or not. I chose Update, then it was saying Updating proceeds, something like that.

6. After few seconds, about a minute, it turned off and back on with Samsung logo. Stayed there for about a minute, then turned off again and back on with Samsung logo again. (This second reset was where I was afraid)

7. Waiting after the second reset was fairly longer than the first one. About 2-4 minutes, not sure. Maybe there was another reset during this. I am not sure since I just left Z5 there alone.

8. When I came back to see how's update going, it was done. I am playing around with it since update, and so far, no problem was found.

Hope everyone is ok with the new firmware.

Well the suspense was killing me so I decided to update my player and everything seems to be working so far. Here are a few sidenotes to supplement Samsung's included directions:

1) To format my player, all I did was right click the Z5 icon that appears in the 'My Computer' directory and choose 'Format.' I didn't bother with the FAT32 setting because it wasn't even offered as an option.

2) When you copy over the Z5Update.dat file, it is NOT necessary to extract your files to the Z5 directory. A simple Copy and Paste to the Z5 'Data' folder is all it takes.

3) As mentioned by everydae, the Z5 WILL perform more than one Soft Reset during the update process -- This is NOT a malfunction. Just be patient (the whole process takes less than 5 minutes) and everything should load up accordingly.

I'm loading up my player with music right now so I'll report back later...

@NS hold down the center button for a few seconds. "added to playlist" will appear.

Enzo, how did you figure out how to trigger the Mobile Playlist... Is there a set of release notes that are available, and if so could you post the link?

Thank god so it seems Samsung listened XD

i was recently invited to a focus group for this product, the Z5 in Manhatten by FocusSuites
they did a focus group for samsung, and Me and this other person told the people at Samsung about this board, so hopefully they read these posts every body has put out and hopefully video will come out soon =]

has anyone else noticed any change in overall volume? After updating my firmware all my music seems to be able to go louder...I guess it could just be me.

lol it's not just you =] it seems samsung really does listen more so than i can say for apple, i'm guessing they probably lifted something in the programing that limited the volume or pumped more juice into the jack iono

Hi, before I buy a Z5, I juz wanted some help about the Firmware 2.28?? .. so when it is installed, it can read all my korean/jap/chinese song titles? Or does it change all english font to a language that is available on the z5? ... Umm did I make sense?
