Alternate headphones on the Sony X series

Can we use alternate headphones with the sony player? I saw posts on people using other headphones But nothing indicating if the noise cancellation works with those headphones?

Previous sony players had the limitation of being linked to the stock headsets if we needed the noise cancellation feature.

The included ones have a plug with 5 leads. Ordinary three-lead headphones will work, but not with the noise cancelling. You can also use the Sony earbuds with other players, but of course those players won't know what to do the extra inputs either.

this means the noise cancellation is again linked to the stock headphones. Lucky that they seem to be somewhat good. But I was hoping to buy the Philips SHE 9850. maybe need to cancel that idea.
