Now that the retail prices for the Zune HD are known, I have to say Sony needs to take a serious look at the competition. At $290 for the 32gb Zune HD and $399 for the 32gb X I'll be shocked if anyone else buys an X unless the prices come down. I've got the 16gb X and can tell you now, even without seeing a Zune HD that Sony's price is out-of-whack. Compare:
ZuneHD 3.3" OLED screen 480 x 272 Sony X 3" OLED screen 432 x 240 ZuneHD Multitouch Sony X single touch ZuneHD Web Browser to compete with Safari on iPod Touch Sony should be embarassed about the X's web browser. Does anyone here think Sony's prices are reasonable? |

What do you think the right price should be? I want the 32 GB x1000 but I will not pay $399, just out of principle. I know the sound is outstanding, which is what I really want in my MP3 players (I'm not as concerned about video), and I really like the Slacker feature. But it looks like Sony really screwed up the Web experience, and with the Creative Zii (and Samsung M1) coming, they will have to drop the price to compete. Is $350 reasonable, or $300? They do come with better than average earphones, which is worth something.

Sony doesn't see the Zune as the competition. They see Apple as the competition. As long as Apple's prices remain very high, Sony's pricing will also be high.

lower prices? sony should have priced the X series way lower from the start but nah, let's charge out of the wazoo.
The only saviour for sony now is the new A series, whenver that arrives. I am hoping for some kind of announcement soon, IFA is in early september so one can hope.

If you guys think US prices suck, you should see how it's priced in Australia. Recently the prices have fallen a bit but 16gb is still $550AUD and 32gb is a crazy $700!!! This is compared to the touch which is $400 for 16gb and $500s for 32gb.

Why is it so expensive for you guys over in England i just bought a 16gb for £165 and the £32 gb is £220 whereas the 32gb touch is £260 to me the price of the sony seemed very competative.

I was probably going to buy one sometime in September but if X1050 drops to similar price as Zune, I might actually change my mind.

I waited until I could get a 16GB Sony for less than £100. Anything more wouldn't have been worth it. Samsung seem reasonably priced but Cowon are dear, too.

Zune's prices are positive now. The Apple fans seem to be sure the new iPod Touch will be cheaper than the current one. I expect everyone's prices, particularly for ther 32gb models to drop. The Zune simply demonstrates what the lower prices for memory and OLED screens can add up to, and it's lower this year than last. Sony is an idiot if they think their Walkman X is competitive with a Touch. Yes, it has it's own unique features. With no apps or PDA functions it's at best half a Touch. The 32gb Sony should be selling for what a 16gb Touch lists for.

well in the end you are not paying for what is inside, but for the name, Sony.

The name Sony to me has no more value that Samsung, Cowon, Sansa, or even Coby for that matter. In the digital age it's what's inside that counts. The X has some decent features. It's no Coby, that's for sure. By the same measure it's not living up to what the Zune HD has.

Well since the wi-fi is totally useless on the X then one would be better at getting the new E or S series coming out. For more than $150 less you would get the same sound quality as the X but louder and with extra FM/voice/line-in recording features. This is a no brainer. There is absolutely no reason to get a Sony X at those prices.
