Default Is the Sony cd-rom really necessary?

Hi there,

I was considering purchasing a 8 GB Sony NWZE438FBLK(?) from Best Buy, but my cd/dvd drive is currently broken. Do I need really the cd-rom to set up the player? I have WMP 11 already.

Thanks, I'd appreciate any input.

No, you don't have to install anything from the CD. The E438 is drag-n-drop, no software required. Or you can sync to it with WMP11. I *think* the CD comes with WMP11 and additional software that will allow you to use iTunes with your player (not positive about the iTunes part).

Edit: The E438 is drag-n-drop with WMP11 installed, which you already have.

I would re-consider getting an E series- they're known to have problems.

Well, good to know I don't need the cd-rom, thanks. I can do without crash-happy itunes.

Anything about the E series you can recall of the top of your head, Dreamnine? The customer reviews I've read seemed pretty good overall, with only some minor issues (starts with the same song on shuffle). I was considering an 8gb Fuze or Zune, as well, if anyone thinks they would make a better purchase.

Constant re-building of library for one. They're Sony's budget players and not that good. A Fuze would definitely be a better buy.

Or just wait for the new S series or A series. :P

Thanks, the rebuilding sounds like a PITA, Fuze seesm like a good alternative, although I've read it has some problems freezing.

The new S and A series look pretty nice, but I'm guessing they'll be out of my price range. I'm just looking for a modestly priced 8gb, $140 tops. The present S & A series look pretty good, though. I'm researching them right now.

Just a heads up, Bing offers a cash-back program that gives you $ back for purchasing from associated retailers. I haven't used it yet myself, but you might be able to find some good deals with it:

You can sign up for with a Windows Live ID.

Yeah, I'm pretty impressed with the S series so far. I think I've found a winner.

Thanks everyone, you've been enormously helpful.

Best Buy has the S series in stock, the 16gb model, for $159.99. That's actually a decent price for what you get, and the SQ is fantastic.

If you drag & drop to a Sony Walkman using Windows Explorer, the "Year" and "Genre" tags in MP3 files are deleted.

You can download the Sony Walkman Content Transfer program, here:

Media Monkey & J.River Media Jukebox work perfectly w/the Sony Walkman players, and all the metadata is transferred as well.

Hi Justin the url you have given takes me to Sony USA and on entering my Walkman model( NWZ A826 ) the site says model not available and I hit a brick wall. I have read somewhere that Content transfer only supports Walkmans marketed in USA Canada and latin America. Any thoughts on this all best Martin
