LAME is arguably the best MP3 encoder, and its variable bitrate encoding saves you a lot of space compared to constant bitrates like 256kbps, while preserving all the quality. Most people would not hear any difference with LAME -v3 files, so you're on the very safe side with -v0 quality encodes.
