Default Which headphones are better for Creative Zen, Sennheiser HD 201 or HD202?

I have a Creative Zen and I want to get decent headphones for around 20$USD, I been looking at the Sennheiser HD201 and HD202, I don't have a headphone amp and I want decent sound for my Zen.

I have the HD201's, and I won't use them without an amp....they need some power put to them. I've read that the Zen doesn't put out very much power to the phones, so if that is true, then out of those 2 choices, the HD202 would be better.

HD 202's are considered the step up. I have them and they have great SQ. Plus, like Marv stated, the HD201's need an amp, as they're kinda' hard to drive.

Update: I don't understand why they're so hard to power when their just 24ohms, 108db. They should be powered fine by almost any player.

Alright I get the HD202 since I don't have an amp and since you said they're a step up from the HD201's plus the HD202's are only like 4$ more.

I might order today or tomorrow from Amazon.
Do you have the HD202's?

I have the HD202, HD212, and the PX100's. All are fantastic, each has a specific use.

The HD 202's sound pretty damn good IMO. And the reviews are pretty positive for them as well. The highs, mids, and lows are pretty even, and hedge on "budget" audiophile. These are the "any" player headphone.

The 212's are bass monsters, so tread lightly w/them. The bass tends to overpower the mids and highs. They pair well w/a player that lacks an EQ and is shallow in the low frequencies (my Touch, and to a lesser extent, Zune, come to mind).

The PX100's are great for portable use while outside, as you can hear sounds around you while wearing them. They have a very balanced sound sig. Throw on a set of PX200 pads and they really do rock!!!

Sennheiser's are pretty good , for the most part, across the board. Just choose the right cans for the usage and player and your good to go.

It really doesn't make sense, given their specs. But hooked up to my Clip or Fuze, 50% volume with the Normal EQ is definitely "low-level" listening(in a quiet room). If a favorite song comes on, you're looking at cranking them up to 80%. This is all after break-in too. They're also a little light on the bass, which the Clip's factory EQ can not fix. But either of the FiiO's can fix that, and you can get a nice balanced sound out of them.

My KSC75's, on the other hand...60 ohms, 101db....and they are louder and better sounding at the same volume....this is why I said, it doesn't make sense. Maybe I should recable my 201's with some of that Monster Cable

How are they with your clip, if you have them?

I don't know Marv, but your not alone on this. There's a large amount of people complaining about the same thing, that the HD201'a are very low w/the volume. That's the reason I didn't get them myself. The 202's, those are another story. Great SQ, and nice volume.

Also, I had the clip for a bit, and the HD202's sound great w/it.

Well, you know what they say about hindsight.....but I had read that the 202's were more like your earlier post described the 212's, over-bassy. So I went with the 201's instead. Now if only I had listened to you, when you recommended the 202's....lol.

Hijacked
I know that the hd202s are probably the best headphones un-amped for such a low amount (ie, below 20 in the UK, around $20 US), but damn are they ugly.
Are there any alternatives which sound (almost) as good, are closed, run off your average player without an amp and are actually bearable to look at, all for that same low price?

"bearable to look at" is very subjective....I know that TDS and I both have
these which we got on sale for $20. I don't know how they compare to the 202's soundwise, but they will run off my Clip and Fuze as loud as you want.

Between the HD202's and the HTX7's, the HD202's probably sound a bit more neutral. The HTX7's are good, but they are the more bass heavy of the 2. I love them both, and FWIW, the HTX7's sound great for $20. For the MSRP of $60 or so, definitely not!!!

And yeah, the HD202's, AND the HD212's are FUGLY as SHIZZLE!!! But, we cant have it all, can we?

HD201 has terrible sound for music.
They are best for gaming or watching a movie and they isolate well but for music, its too much treble and no real bass.

I disagree that 202 is supposed to be a step up from 201, like the PX100/PX200 the 1 is for a more neutral sound and the 2 is for a bass-heavy experience.

Reviews of both HD202 and PX200 (which I can confirm having listened to them) described them as having very muffled mids and highs.

HD201, to my ears, has a lovely crisp sound for music, although they benefit from a boost in the bass.

It's all subjective though right?

Its the proportions, they're all wrong, and the headband should be straight godammit!
Although its hard finding the the HTX7 cheap in the UK. I'll have to hold back I suppose, wait till they drop price on amazon or something

UPDATE: Just browsing amazon, and found the Creative HQ-1400. I presume they're in competition with the HD201/202s and have the high sensitivity and low resistance aardvark told me to look out for. Anyone know anything about them, comfort, sound etc?

Unfortunately, most full sized Creative hp's that I've seen, including the Aurvana DJ's I had and returned, are not too good sounding. The exception is supposed to be the Aurvana Live hp's. But, TBH, those are rebranded hp's anyways (I think they might be Denon's).

Are they bad in comparison to the HDs, or bad as in below average? Lets face it, other than my aircushions I dont have any good headphones to compare them to, so I wouldn't be as let down as say, someone who had moved from 100 headphones.
If its the latter, its either look a fool with 202s or wait for the HTX7 to drop in price a bit
