Default e250r freezing at "refresh database" Unsolvable?

i have not seen this solved anywhere, is it solvable? here is my post from another forum....

note: i am waiting for a response from sansa customer service, but my daughter is starting to lose faith here.

i have tried for 12+ hours to get rid of the "refresh database" error. (device freezes at refresh database with the progress bar about 2/3 of the way through.)

FACTS: (windows vista)

1. sansa e250R (boots with rhapsody screen after sandisk screen)

2. device was purchased from woot and is refurbed.
3. device has worked fine for over a year.
4. refresh database error happened immediately after i unwittingly deleted all files on device.
5. the only time i can see the device, on "my computer", is when i plug it in recovery mode icon reads:"16mb-format", with 1 file named, "version", which reads...
Version Info: Product Rev.: PP5022AF-05.51-S301-01.01-RN01.02.031-D
Base Code: 05.51-S301-01.01-RN01.02.031-D
ODM Ver.: S301-01.01-RN01.02.031-D
OEM Ver.: RN01.02.031-D
Build Type: -D
Build Date: 2006.12.14
Build Number: (Build 32.10)

6. under device manager, the device shows up as working properly with the following microsoft windows driver:
drivers/umd/wpdFs/.dll
7. i have completed every step of the only instruction link that would go to the final step.(rockbox link below). upon safely removing hardware in step 10, my device says that it has updated the hardware and after restarting, it freezes at refresh database AGAIN!

QUESTIONS:

1. am i follwing directions for the right version /250r v1?
2. is there a confirmed link that has worked for others with the refresh database freezing like this?

3. re:step 6 below, i wasnt able to boot up my device in any mode but recovery mode, (i can do manafacturers mode but my computer doesnt aknowledge the device). so i followed the rest of the steps in recovery. i imagine that my problem lies here? 4. anybody got a sledgehammer? not for the device, for my head.

note:when posting, an invalid html was found in the message body. not sure what was extracted but it looks like all the info is still here. thanks in advance for any help you might offer. great forum!
here is the rockbox link i followed with details pasted below: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...0RInstallation

Step 1 - Original Sansa bootloader patching (i followed this step 1st.)

Windows installer
  1. Download e200rpatcher.exe
  2. Download e200-manufac-driver.zip and extract it somewhere on your computer
  3. Attach your e200R to your computer in manufacturer mode (turn on the hold switch, hold select and plug in USB while continuing to hold select for about 10s)
  4. When Windows asks for the driver, point it to the folder you extracted the driver zip file to
  5. If Windows does not ask for a driver, it means that it has installed one automatically and you must follow these steps before continuing: (For Windows XP, other versions may vary slightly)
    1. Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, go to the Hardware tab, and enter Device Manager.
    2. Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click USB Mass Storage Device (or something similar) and select Update Driver.
    3. Select "No, not this time", then "Install from a list or specific location", and then "Search for the best driver in these locations" and click the "Include this location in the search" box. Now use the Browse button select the location of the drivers and click OK.
  6. Run the e200rpatcher.exe file and follow the prompts. Your Sansa should have some text on the screen. If the last line says "(something) aborted" then head to the forums and look for threads relating to your problem.
  7. If it says "Firmware Unlocked, Proceed to Step 2" then it was successful and you can continue.
Rockbox Installation from Windows
  1. Make a folder named sansa on your desktop
  2. Download the following file and place it inside the new sansa directory: rhapsody-1.0.2.31.zip
  3. Unzip this file to receive pp5022.mi4
  4. Rename the resulting file to OF.mi4 (Oh, not Zero - as in Original Firmware)
  5. Right-click to download the following file and place it inside the sansa folder: pp5022.mi4
  6. Boot up your device and connect the USB cable (make sure you have set the USB Mode to MSC/Rhapsody)
  7. Copy pp5022.mi4 to the root of your device
  8. Copy OF.mi4 to the system folder within your device (make sure you have set Windows to "Show hidden files" and don't "Hide protected operating system files"
  9. Download a recent Sansa e200 build of Rockbox from here and unzip it to the root of your device
  10. "Safely remove" your Sansa, disconnect the USB cable and wait for it to reboot. It should refresh the database, then upgrade the firmware. After another reboot, you should be in Rockbox!
  11. Delete the sansa folder from your desktop

You cannot install rockbox without working USB mode in the OF. There would be no way to transfer rockbox to the player without USB.

I recommend trying out the e200unbrick wiki page. And lose that habbit of skipping steps. Doing that is a great way to break your player.

halafrickenleuia!!!! it worked! anybody that has the refresh database problem, go here first!

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...nsaE200Unbrick

here are the exact link locations of the files i used (all located on the 3rd attempt/section of the above page)

http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/e200/rha...y-1.0.2.31.zip
http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/e200/BL_...dSupportSD.btl

just copy/paste or drag/drop these files into your 16mb-format file along with the blank sansa.fmt file and disconnect. done!

big thanks to saratoga for the page reference as i have tried many different links and even though they all looked the same and the processes were similar, this one happened to have all the right file links for the e250r.

now that i have done this, what do i do? can i just load songs or is there more to the process?

Now that USB works you can follow the install directions for the e200R, and they should work as normal.
