c250 frozen at splash (logo) screen

I was syncing some new files to my c250 (don't know the firmware version -- as new as is available for this player) and started getting messages from Windows Media Player to the effect that there wasn't enough room on device for certain tracks (I was nowhere near the 2 GB limit).

Shortly after that, the player froze on the splash screen and I can't get it to recover.

Help!

The unit will power off and on the normal way.

Tried

• removing battery for several minutes and reinserting
• powering on and holding the 'menu' button for more than one minute
• powering on while pressing the 'down' button

- nothing has worked so far.

Any ideas?
