I ordered a D2+ from Newegg with the discount coupon (not here yet). For those of you who turned your D2 into the D2+, what are your thoughts on SQ? There have been a few posts on folks thinking the D2+ firmware and SQ not as good as the D2's 2.* firmware.

I haven't gotten my D2, but there shouldn't be much differences if you listen on flat settings. The hardware is the same after all, I think.
There's a frequency response graph on the main page of ABI. That'll give you some hints on what it's gonna sound like. |

It just did'nt sound as detailed to me, instruments did'nt seem to "come alive", and I felt like it needed slightly more treble. I gave it 2 days of testing, before I decided to go back to the original firmware, where I perceive an immediate difference.
Now I'm not trying to start a "religion" as they say on these boards, so don't "follow me" and skip the D2+ or BBE+ all together. Both the D2 and the D2+ sound good, the D2+ just has a slightly different color that you may or may not have a preference for. So I encourage you to try both of them. Here are the graphs: showing the difference betwen the two. http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...2&postcount=24

Don't forget though, the D2+ firmware goes by pages when you hit the down and up buttons for music. That is very useful to me.
The only diff is the bbe; all else is the same. I verified this with my friend's D2 beside my upgraded one. |

Matter of taste. I loaded D2+ firmware on my D2, and like it much better. One key thing for me is that getting a D2+ to sound good (spacious, smooth, good bass) requires a lot less customized tweaking with effects.

The sound chip is exactly the same, guys. The only difference sitting in sound signature is BBE+. Remember that the D2 firmware originally loads with BBE in effect.
Flat sound, it's the same.

Are the default settings on the players the same? I noticed a difference in sound when using the defaults, not after setting everything to flat. I'll cheerfully concede I may have been mistaken.

I believe some of the effects are on, but are low by default

mako, "good" is relative, some people say this player sounds awful, while others find it extremely good (cowon has been said ot produce the best sound quality on the market) the player itself has many settings you can fiddle with till the sound is right for you.
-BBE/BBE+ (this is the only difference between D2 and D2+ Firmware aside from version number and boot screens/themes/etc The players are virtually the same thing, hardware wise) -Mach 3 Bass -A 5 band EQ -MP Enhance -3D enhance -Stereo Enhance the player also has speed modifier (50%-150%) and pan (chose which side gets more sound, left or right)
