Default DejuVu font conversion errors

Environment: VMWare/Debian4 on WinXP. I had to install FreeType and otf2bdf to make this work.

Why is this happening?
I tried it with FreeSans and it works with that family, but the fonts look rather wavery - like all the letters are drunk.
I saw the excellent fonts here:
and thought I'd try doing the same with other parts of the DejaVu family.
Except I get this funky error.
otc2bdf seems to work, but the convbdf tool suggests otherwise. I tried it with several sizes, just in case it was some weird one-case thing.
Any ideas?

debian:~/rockbox/fontdev# otf2bdf -p 08 -o 08-DejaVuSansCondensed-Bold.bdf DejaVuSansCondensed-Bold.ttf
debian:~/rockbox/fontdev# ../tools/convbdf -f 08-DejaVuSansCondensed-Bold.bdf
ERROR: Negative char width: -1
ERROR: Error analyzing the font
