"Watchmen" is based on the mid-1980s comic miniseries of the same name. The series was released by DC Comics. Although the characters in "Watchmen" didn't appear until the miniseries, they are based on the Charlton characters (Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, The Question, Nightshade, Peacemaker, and Peter Cannon - Thunderbolt) that DC Comics had (then) recently acquired.

The series was written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons and is set in an alternate universe from the one that Superman, Batman, and the rest of the DC heroes inhabit. In the Watchmen's universe, there are no real superheroes (meaning individuals with superhuman powers) except for Dr. Manhattan.

One of the reasons that "Watchmen" is considered an important series is because its storytelling and the topics and concepts it dealt with. The series has had an impact on many series that have followed it.

On the topic of the movie itself, I saw it yesterday and enjoyed it (although I knew the whole story since I had read the miniseries). It was fairly true to the comics, and I thought all of the performances were spot-on.
