Default Archos 605 wifi VS archos 5.

Which one should I get? I would Get 160gb for the 605 wifi. And 250 for the 5. Opinions, is it worth 150$ extra?

After lots of researching, I am down to the 605 or 5.

I got the Very same question.

Ill probably wait till there is a refurbished version for the 5 and prob just buy that

I just read (1 minute ago) that internet speed is not that much faster than the 605, so I think ill go with the 605

If I had it to do again, I would've waited for the 5.

The 605 has been nothing but trouble for me. I got a bad one, apparently. It's been nothing but trouble for me since I got it, and now sits idle.

In terms of features, the 5 supports OGG and FLAC playback (without plugins) while the 605 doesn't (even with plugins, as far as I know).

The battery on the 5 is also more powerful (22 hours of audio playback, vs. 17 on the 605, 7 hours video, vs. 5.5 on the 605).

But if those features aren't important, then obviously you go with the less expensive one. Especially in these troubled times.

I have the Archos 605 160GB, 605 4GB/SD, and the Archos 5. I had been using the 605 SD because it's very light, and I just load up my netflix movies on a 16GB card. The 605 SD is lighter than the Archos 5, but I like the 5 better in every other respect. The screen on the 5 is far, far superior to the one on the 605. Gone is the graininess that you usually get with a touchscreen. You can especially tell the difference when surfing, the web pages come up a lot cleaner and stronger on the 5. I think the 5 is worth the extra dough just for the screen.

If you want to try out both and happen to live in the SF Bay Area, let me know.

lol I live like 200 miles from there... San diego....

Well I am mostly concerned about the internet speed..... IS there really that big of a difference that will make the 5 worth the extra 150 dollars?

the Arm Cortex on the 5 is one of the fastest mobile CPUs around, the load speed on the 5 is rated faster than the n810 or iPhone

But can you tell the difference in speed? (internet connection?)

Is it really that noticeable?

I meant the loading web pages, are several seconds faster than comparable devices, plus the 5 probably doesn't get choppy like the 605 when scrolling around or viewing flash pages and what not

The difference in speed is definitely noticeable and obvious.

If that was the only difference, I would not pay $150 unless I was a very serious, daily power user.

But of course it's not the only difference. Overall the 5 is a far nicer device than the 605. And you don't have the annoyance of paying for the web plugin, I don't know if you took that into account in your calculations.

The 5 is right now the best HD-based PMP out there. I have the 605, Q5W, and A3 and it whips all of them. The screen of the A3 comes close but it's not a touchscreen.

I still travel exclusively with a 32 GB Touch, but that's only because it's a lot smaller/lighter and I don't have to worry about a hard drive. The video viewing experience is much better on the 5.

Well, the 80gb 605 refurbished is 195 (202 with shipping)

And the cheapest 5 is 323 but 60GB (Brand new)

So thats 128 extra bucks, which I am not sure if they are worth it.... Does archos has some time of warranty included?

My problem was with the battery. After the first few charges, I could never get it to work consistently for moe than an hour (and this is playing music, not video). The removable battery was supposed to be a big selling point, but I think that's where the problem came in with mine. And sending it back under warranty did no good. They just sent it back, saying they fixed it, but it still had the same problem.

I wouldn't completely disown Archos at this point, but the 605 wifi is definitely the worst Archos device I've ever owned. I've owned the Jukebox 20, the XS 202, the 604, and then the 605 wifi.

The difference between the gen 5 & 6 is quite marked, the 5 does a lot more is faster, has a better screen, better styling and to my mind fewer quirks than the gen 5. You can surf and play music/web radio on the gen 6, check email, have avi desktop wallpaper, a neater UI and the sound has improved by a vast amount - no more static or hdd noise via the headphones. The downsides are - DVR dock has no throughput for the tv signal so if you only have one scart lead you need a splitter, poorer conectivity (mainly applies to the Archos 7 when compared to the 705) without added extras. Gen 6 is still a bit buggy but perhpas this will get better with newer firmware, it still by no means finished. I personally would go for a gen 6 if you dont need the extra conectivity.
