Default Coby MP-C694 player lcd screen blank

My daughter has a Coby MP-C694 and up till a few months ago it was fine. Now the screen refuses to come on, though music still plays and the red light around the play/pause button lights up. Just no screen which makes it a challenge to navigate to other menus because yo don't know where youare or how to get back to just the music, etc.

I tried resetting using the reset hole but that doesn't work either, the player remains the same (didn't reformat, music all there) ... just to be sure: is the reset button pressed while the player is on or off?

The only downloadable software/driver/firmware update from the Coby site is a "Windows98 driver" which I haven't done anything yet because I don't want to install any incompatible drivers on my XP system unless I know it's safe to do so.

I also checked the Coby in the Device Manager window and clicked on the "update driver" option which apparently it did, but still no results.

Any thoughts on how to bring the screen back to life?

Thanks, HG Guy

Since I have not played with that model of Coby, I will try my best.

I think the reset button is to turn it off if it was frozen.

You could use the Windows 98 driver in XP, but it is not needed since Windows XP has all the drivers it need, but if you have an old enough install and do not have the updates, MTP drivers might not be there tho.

Can you try it on a different computer? Is it charged up?

Yeah, don't think it's a driver problem ... The Coby will charge and play, but the LCD screen remains blank, and when I say blank I mean dark, black etc. I can shine a flashlight on the screen and just barely make out the menu and functions (I can see the charge bar moving etc) but there's no backlight to illuminate the screen.

And this seems beyond using the reset button.

Thanks for the reply,

HG Guy

From what you are telling me, either the backlight setting is set to off or the backlight has went bad.

Yep, the backlighting is definitely off. It's possible my daughter may have turned it off by mistake (don't know if that's a feature for this player, never saw it on any preferences menu). If that's the case I wonder how I'd get it turned back on?

More than likely it's probably just gone bad. It was new when bought but was a closeout item (not even sure if Coby sells this model anymore)...

Looks like we'll be shopping for a new player (and AnythingButCoby!)

Thanks for your help!
