I'm thinking about starting over and going either FLAC, OGG, or MP3 320 on my i7. I love how the i7 sounds and I want it to be perfect so anyone have any suggestions or thoughts?

Go to mp3 VBR @192kbps or better - it's pretty much transparent. Just look through the forum and see if you can locate a good prog for the ripping. Here's a link to the software section: http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=23

I pretty much use Media Monkey and it should do it for me. Ever done this? I'll probably go 320

What bitrate are you using now? I did some testing and came to the conclusion that 256 kbps mp3 was the best choice for me. I had trouble hearing the difference between 256 kbps mp3, 320 kbps mp3, and the WAV file While 192 kbps was noticeably lower in quality than 256 kbps, it was still pleasant. At 128 kbps, I didn't enjoy the music. If your music is at 256 kbps or higher mp3, then I suggest leaving things as is. If you music is at a lower bitrate then I suggest that you do some tests on your player with FLAC, OGG, or WAV ,256 kbps mp3, and 320 kbps mp3. Depending on your music, earphones, and hearing, you might not even be able to tell the difference between 256 kbps mp3 and 320 kbps mp3. Some will probably suggest that you use variable bitrate. I just noticed some people have had some issues with some VBR files and the Fuze. While variable bitrate may save some space, there is much more of a chance of having issues using variable bitrate vs a constant bitrate.

Yes it is testing time at OL no9's place. The FLAC sounds good to me but I've only heard it on 2 different albums- Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon and Radiohead - OK Computer. One is old the other has alot of purpose driven distortion. So I'm going to do some test tracks in Ogg, Flac, MP3 256/320 and see what she does.

Just try to see if VBR sounds solid for you. It tends to yield better sounding and better sized files.

), VBR 192 sounds great on the i7 and various other players that I’ve tested, including some sansa players that I own. That said, the flac files I have work very well on my i7, but I’m not about to re-rip all my cd’s and lose all that space. FWIW, for properly encoded files it’s hard to tell the difference unless you’re sitting still doing critical listening.

That's the thing though I probably am going to rerip alot of my cd's so I'm debating on full blown Flac for the hard drive and 256 VBR for the i7. It's 16g so the space won't be to bad. It's just that the purpose of the experiment is to put enough tracks on it to make random worth listening to and to have CD SQ. If I go flac to the player it'll sound better but I'm not going to buy(contrary to walkgoods urgings)UE11's to try it out.
![]() I don't play but those are my Lottery phones.

True, true... that's alot of plasma to sell though. 52 weeks worth. Then I'll have to go on grapefruit juice to get off the orange juice addiction. You'll see me walking through a grove scratching my arms

Even with the UE11 you would also come to the conclusion that FLAC is a waste on a portable player... LAME -v0/2 or Vorbis -q6 sure sounds the same.
