Default Rockbox For *Some* Sony Walkman Players Becoming A Reality

I'm pleased to present you Rockbox on Sony Walkman DAPs

Already working on my NWZ-E360 (on the pic) and on NWZ-E370. Quick port thanks to pamaury, French Rockbox dev.

Several players (E340, E440, E440K, S540) share a very close or common firmware to the E360 so they might be supported quite soon too.

Wow, that's big news! Up to now, it seemed the Sony DAPs were impervious to cracking.

The NWZ-E360 exists in 3 versions: NWZ-E363 (4GB), E364 (8GB) and E365 (16GB). The latter is rare and has been released only in a few countries.

The same for the NWZ-E370 but I wouldn't recommend this one. Strangly, it's much worse than the E360 (128x160 screen vs 240x320), no volume and hold buttons, worse build quality etc etc.

If you are interested, I can let you know when new Sony devices are supported. But maybe I should open a new dedicated thread instead.

Sounds interesting. I'll have to keep an eye on this. The one thing I've always wanted was .m3u playlists on my S639. It would mean giving up ClearBass which I really enjoy but easy .m3u playlists might be worth it.

I'm not sure I'd buy a Sony just to have Rockbox on it though. What's been one most attractive features of the Sonys I've had has been the rock solid firmware teamed with a simple UI. The tactile buttons also make blind operation really simple for me.

I've never thought the amp section was particularly good with sensitive IEMs although I like the overall build quality. Rockbox can do quite a bit but I don't think it's able to make up for something like a relatively high output impedance.

Would love to be able to try this on my NWZ-S616 if that ever becomes a reality.

My thought was, give up Clear Bass, but get gapless playback......an intriguing compromise to consider.

That's an issue I noticed when buying this E360. I thought the lack of bass and medium was due to a different sound signature but in the end after discussing on the #rockbox IRC I found out that this is due to the impedance of my Westone UM3x. This is kinda weird because that's the only recent player I have which cannot drive properly my UM3x.

As I only use those IEM for my daily use, I can't really enjoy the E360 sound, whatever OF or Rockbox.

BTW, don't expect too much. It's difficult to port Rockbox to a device that you don't own and obviously the developer cannot buy many Sony DAPs to work on. You would need more time and money for that.

It's definitely early days for this port. All I can find on the Rockbox site is the Ladies and gentlemen, we have sound on the Sony NWZ-E360 email.

I'm pleased to announced that Rockbox successfully played its first track
on the Sony NWZ-E364:
Bonobo - Black Sands - Prelude

Following up on the work for the E370, the work for the E360 was mostly
trivial, only the lcd is different and it has a hold button.
At the same time I realised that the OF for the E360 seems to be the same
for others players, so the port might also work more or less out of the box
on the following players: E440, E440K, S540, and E340. If you happen to own
any of those players and feel like trying or sending me the player so I can
do the work, feel free to contact me.

Cheers

From reading that it seems that pamaury would need to have the DAP to create a port for it. Considering how much work I've read that creating a port involves I'd think that it wouldn't be realistic to expect Rockbox to be available across all Sony models any time soon, if at all.

@Lebellium: make the first letter a capital and it's much easier to decipher. And autocorrect constantly keeps putting an "I" in on my cellphone,...

Just some news.

Beside the E360 and E370, the E380 is now supported too. It was quite easy since the E380 is just a rebranded E370. It's the same hardware and the same software except that the E380 supports AAC files contrary to E370. But it's sold as a new player at higher price. GG Sony

The keymapping for these targets has been reworked today (just update your Rockbox build).

Unfortunately we face a battery life issue. I benchmarked ~32hrs with OF vs only 10hrs with Rockbox. Pamaury is trying to identify and fix the issue.

Also, the battery indicator is not calibrated yet and the FM radio doesn't work yet. But except these few points, the port is already quite usable I would say

As mentioned in the 1st post, other targets should be supported sooner or later.
For example pamaury owns a E440 and E460 but those use raw NAND (instead of eMMC) and he hasn't reversed the FTL yet. It's a huge task

E440 and E340 are the same units, aren't they? It seems the only difference is usb socket type.
