at the moment, i only have 11.3 gigs of music and that has taken years to collect...i don't use the zune for video, so i don't anticipate ever needing 120gigs, but it's cool that they are trying to do something else to kill Ipods HD dominance since other companies have seemingly given up on the HD market

I would only need the space once I get a zune pass.

I'm with SumX on the music thing, my collection is a similar size.
But the sooner they roll out a 160, then they can start competing with the iPod properly, and hopefully we'll see it gone.

actually, i think MS is smart with this one...they are taking on a segment that many people aren't in 120gb HDD...at 160, there will still be people saying "well, i could just get an ipod"...at 120, there are people who go "well, i need more than 80, but i sure as hell dont need or want to pay for 160...oh wait, the Zune has 120, that sounds like a good deal!" and bam! another Zune is sold. Pretty smart if you ask me...

It almost looks like a brushed aluminum front

Here is a image zoomed in

http://tmohost.com/espacePrive/crule...zune.120GB.jpg

While it looks shiny, There may just be smudges on the unit.

Edit: After more reading it says "Product Design Stage: Production", Indicating that it was ready for production back in June.

Edit 2: There is a slight chance, but very low chance that they come with a new version of premium ear buds. The FCC doc calls for the cable length to be 1.35m while every place I read says the ones right now are 1.3m in length

IMO it might be a good move or it might not. For instance, I am one of those people who purchases the largest hard drive available as long as the price is right. I truly don't need 160GB, but as soon as I saw it available I went for one, regardless that I will never fill it up with music. If both 120GB and 160GB were available at the same time I would opt for the larger one.

However, because of the larger screen and now the inclusion of gapless playback, the Zune 120GB seems to be the better purchase.

if they were the same price, then yea, i could understand that...but i wont spend like, 100 bucks more for something i'll never use...they have to price it right...i think if they could get below the ipod pricing, and not equal to it, they would do much better...but depending on the price diff between the 120gb Zune and the 160gb Ipod, they could be positioned quite nicely

You're never going to get a 250gb Zune. MS isn't the type of comp to go the Archos route.

This is correct, unless if Microsoft purchases Archos.

They will not be rolling out the Zune 160 anytime soon. This is due to the manufacturing costs associated with adding a larger physically sized hard drive. This being engineering costs, production line retooling, and additional costs dealing with more parts.

Toshiba only recently released (a few months ago ) the 120GB drive in a single platter 5mm width- by contrast the 160GB is and 8mm width.

So the Zune team made the choice to wait for technology to shrink rather than to spend the money on retooling a manufacturing line in order to go for the larger capacity zune. I can see why its the right choice as you can see from Sumx's and others comments- people have a hard time filling even an 80GB. Capturing the 160GB market didnt warrnt the payoff.

There is more Zune stuff coming- hardware, software, pricing. Stay tuned- im excited to share my first hand info as soon as i can.
