Default Need help with setting a custom EQ.

Please could someone give me some ideas as to how to customize the 5 EQ bars, as I find it hard to make the subtle changes (and have no idea what they mean anyway). The sort of music I listen to is rock/indie.

Any help much appreciated

Hello wumba22. Welcome to ABI!

Sorry, I haven't really heard of many people that even use the EQ, let alone customized. For most, the EQ doesn't really improve SQ much, especially with improved quality headphones. If you don't seem to notice any improvement for yourself when customizing it, then I would have to say it isn't worth using. To get the most out of sound quality from the Zen, buy some good quality IEM’s to use instead of the stock earbuds that come supplied; they're not that great.

Keep in mind, I don't consider myself an audiophile. I am partial to the EP-630's from Creative. They were a huge improvement over the stock ear-buds. They are now almost half the cost of what I originally paid earlier in the year.

Help help using custom EQ

i tried to find a more general thread, but i couldnt, and seeing as how i had a creative zen, i thought you guys might be able to relate more. anyways, like how the creative zen has its own custom EQ option, i was wondering if someone could tell me or link me to how to use the custom EQ's? like what each bar is for and what lowering/increasing it does? i've never been a big audiophile, but i have a back-up mp3 player that has custom EQ's and doesnt sound so great on default. could you guys show me how to use one?

thanks

for me equaliser does make a difference, here is some help for you from the zen user guide that came on the cd

"Using equalizer (EQ)Using equalizer (EQ)

EQ is the player's collection of equalizer settings, which you can use to enhance your audio tracks. You can select an equalizer preset or customize your own settings to suit the genre or style of your music.
To select an equalizer preset
  • In the main menu, select System Audio Settings EQ.
  • Select one of the EQ menu items.
When an EQ setting is selected, appears on the Now Playing view.
To customize equalizer settings
  • In the EQ screen, select Custom EQ.
Each slider on the Custom EQ screen represents successively higher frequencies that can be adjusted.

    • 80 controls bass frequency
    • 250 adjusts the low mid-range frequency
    • 1k adjusts the mid-range frequency
    • 4k adjusts the upper mid-range frequency
    • 13k adjusts the treble frequency.

Select a slider.

Press or to move the control knob up or down, to vary the amount of boost or reduction in the selected frequency range.

Press or to select the remaining sliders, and repeat step 3.

Select the checkmark to save and enable the Custom EQ settings.

Keep in mind you have the different music style presets as well. I believe I liked the Rock preset when I used the stock earbuds.

one could actually fool around with the EQs and see. sometimes i set all the 5 bars to maximum and i like it on some type of muisc. what i did was i set the shortcut button to take me to the 'Audio Settings' so that i can change the EQ settings without having to go through many menus. or is there any other faster way to change the EQs?

I believe this is the quickest way to do so. I used to do this myself when I used the EQ; nice feature.

Wmba22,

i think personally think that you really don’t need know what the bars do or represent, i play with my eq all the time, mostly when i change the type of music I’m listening to and when i change my head phones.
the whole thing for me is enjoying the sound, my advice would be to just sit down some time and actively listen to some songs from your library that represent the different genres you like, and fiddle with the eq till you get what you like out of it.

also (sorry for the long winded ness), the advice that BobbyRS gave you about headphones is where you’ll see the biggest return in quality.
if your looking for good phones under $100 , <which is all i have> i can recommend Koss porta pros, px100's, and v-moda vibes, i like them all in different situations, and for different reasons, you should do research on as many as possible and pic what you think suits your listening habits.

..plus, i often find myself lowering the upper mid range and treble by a couple of clicks when i listen to inde music, takes some of the edge off the sometimes twangee or shrill guitars when there not mixed so well. :>

Hopefully I'm not going too far off topic, but I was wondering whether anyone knew if the equalizer settings are global(for everything played on the player), or is it just for mp3s? I noticed that it has an EQ icon when playing mp3s, but none when playing video. I don't use the EQ much, just curious as to how it functions.

I believe the EQ works only for the Audio files. I do not hear any difference in the audio quality of the videos if the EQ is being used or is set to Off.

Thanks, Bobby. I couldn't hear any difference being made when I adjusted the equalizer before playing videos either, just wondered if it was just me.
