Default Replace Hard Drive With Compact Flash Memory

I found these on ebay, and i am thinking about getting one and a 32gb compact flash.

I'm thinking I'll get better battery life and 2 extra gb to boot.

Does anyone know for sure if this will work ?

I would love to have a ZVM to try this on.... I have an 8GB card, but not a 32GB. I wonder how picky it is with CF cards.

Default replace harddrive with compact flash mem part 2

A few mounts ago I posted about an adpter that lets you replace the hardrive with a compact flash card

I have since had time to gather all the parts and try it out..

Step one opening the zen...
see http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archi...n-vision-m.php
on how to get it open

Step 2 do you have a Zif harddrive or a Ide harddrive (mine was Zif)

My zen with the back removed

front cover Harddrive and back cover with battery

close up on harddrive and ribbon cable release

close up on harddrive motherboard plug

Side "A" of harddrive ribbon cable

Side "B" of harddrive ribbon cable (note white triangle points to pin one)

32Gb Compact flash found on e-bay for $50

Zif harddrive to compact flash adapter found on e0bay for $9

Zif harddrive to compact flash adapter with compact flash installed

close up of adapter (note white triangle points to pin one and must match pin one on harddrive ribbon)

faceplate , compact flash adapter , back plate

the compact flash adapter does not fit as snug as hardrive, I used some duct-tape to keep things from moving around to munch

compact flash adapter sitting on top of tape and harddrive plunged into motherboard

compact flash formatted and ready to go

me playing one of my favorite podcast

I test this for about a week everything seams to be working
total cost for upgrade about $70 us

Very nice! Great pics too! I love the duct tape part. Would be nice to know the exact specs of the CF card. Be sure to let us know of any improvement of runtime and speed. Again, nice job!

Merged with existing thread. Moved to the Mod sub-forum and made a sticky.

I have Zen with IDE connector, this adaptor and Pretec 16 GB CF card. In recovery mode everything works fine ( formatting and cleaning up ), but I can't upload firmware ( "Upgrade failed" on original and cracked firmware uploader, CreativeWizard crashes on my PC).
Do you have any idea how to upload/fix it?

I would try installing the firmware from other computers. Keep in mind, not all CF cards will work. Make sure the specs of the card you are using matches that of one (see above) that is known to work for best results.

Yes, please do tell Java! You've had time to play around with it and if you could post an update, many here would be grateful.

Default **Update**

sorry for not updating....

start up time
cold avg 10sec
warm avg 5sec
I do not know if that's better or not ?

battery life seems better,I use it as a mp3 player about 3hr to 5hr a day, I load podcast onto it ever 2 to 3 days so I have not gotten to go below half battery , it keeps topping off. Before 3 days was the max I could go on a charge

as to how to flash the bios, I had no problem, you might try recovery mode
format all, reload firmware.

as for what CF cards work....will the one I got works, to be honest I just got the cheapest 32gb card I could find on ebay and lucked out.
the Specks are listed above I would love to know whats different on your 16gb?

Thanks for the update I'm going to try it on one of these devices I have here. Also have you played videos on it yet? If so how did that go. Are you using ZenCast for the podcasts? Sorry for all the questions. I'm watching a 32GB card on Ebay so of course we are all anxious to know. Thanks again.

Yippie I'm buying this ASAP. So many of my friends bring me their players to repair for them. Many will be happy about this no moving parts As for ZenCast I must be one of the lucky few it still works for Thanks.

Talking Waitng For My Goodies

Ok I won the 32GB CF card($60.95). That particular card is scarce on Ebay. Buy it Now price between $73.95-$79.95 so I didn't do too bad. I 've ordered the adapter but.that may be here after the card seller is in Hong Kong. Any suggestions as to what to use to stabilize the card adapter besides duct tape. I don't like the idea of adhesive & heat together.
