1.8 CF type HDD

So for a wile i was fixing ipods, but after the market dropped out I stopped. So now I have a few old style ipod hard drives. I'm looking for a mp3 player/enclosure for them.
Having worked on ipods I know how much they suck, so I'm not using one of those.
I'm a Linux user so I'm looking for something that's usable without firmware installed on the pc.

I so not know what iPods you did have, but take a look at Rockbox because they have good source of info on other players that might use those drives.

I've read that the iPod drives are locked to work only on iPods, not other players, but I may be wrong.

No, you can use them in any compatible player that uses the same HD connector (Zune, ZV:M, etc). The only thing is that some are branded for Apple (like the old HD in my Mini - now rockin' a cf card!!!).
