Default problem with 1st gen Zune 30

When I connect my Zune to my pc via USB it says on the player's display that it's connected. The problem is that when I open the Zune software on my pc it doesn't recognize it. The icon in the lower left corner of the UI shows it's not connected even though it is connected. I can't sync or anything. I can't add any files.
Can someone tell me how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

try formatting the player. when starting your player press <-, left and Center to do this, then follow the on screen instructions.

that is an extreme solution, Crule

@OP: try resetting it (hold back and up on the dpad for 3 seconds) and changing USB ports.
Check for any error inside Windows when plugging the device to your PC.

Thanks for the responses. Tried resetting and it didn't do any good. As for changing USB ports, I have a 2nd Zune 30 and it works fine with the same connection. The Zune in question I've tried on two different pcs and it's the same thing.

Any other possibilities before going with Cruleworld's suggestion of reformatting? Also, are there any firmware updates for the Zune? I just downloaded the Zune Software update but I'm not thinking that's the same as the firmware. I'm still kinda getting adjusted to the Zune as it seems to be a radically different player from the Creative Zen Vision M, which is what I was using before.
Thanks again.

Go with the reformatting as the resetting of your player didn't work.

If you are using firmware 2.5 on the player you have the latest.

I had the same problem when I reformatted my computer.

Make sure that these are installed:
  • Windows Media Format Runtime (11.0.5721.5145 or higher)
  • User Mode Driver Framework
After that install the Zune software and it should recognize it.
