Are you using Windows XP, Vista, ME, 2000, Linux, Mac? Can you look in the Settings for USB modes?

If you are using MTP mode and have XP, you need Service Pack 2 or 3 with Windows Media Player 10 or 11. The best is with all the Windows updates.

If you do not have Service Pack 2 or 3 with Windows Media Player 10 or 11, you need to use MSC mode
