Just for clarification, it's not a matter of "taking off" it's a difference between how memory manufacturers count bytes, and how Windows counts them.

This might help to explain:

Has anyone tried to stuff an 8gb with movies they burned? How many did you fit in it?

That depends entirely on the bit-rate at which the videos are encoded...

Oh yeah. Isn't 128kbps the norm? I don't know the differences.

for music that is. Actually 180+ is the norm for me. For videos i use about 700-1000kbps.

Is there a site I should go to in order to learn what's best in bitrate or can you just tell me? Because optimization is always fun.

For the frame size of the P2, you will get perfectly acceptable movies using bitrates of 500-600 kbps with the XviD codec and the converter built into MediaCoder. See the link at guidepost sticky on the top of the forum page.

For audio, you should look into LAME mp3. Personally I use either -V0 or -V2 depending on the complexity of the music.

I had six movies on mine the other night -- and I've got some music on, too. I was really pleased with number of movies that will fit.

Naturally, as others have said, it depends some on how the movies are ripped and encoded, and the amount of space you're using for your music as well. But, I bought the 8 GB player hoping it would hold up to 5 films, so being able to hold 6 is pretty good.

I changed my P2 to UMS, so moving movies on and off the player is pretty easy -- I'm hoping to rip and convert most of my favorite dvds and have them available as I need them . . .
