Default compiling rockbox in ubuntu linux

can some one tell me how to compile rockbox under Linux
i have followed rockbox's instructions on the cross compiler and have installed it but i don't fully understand the instructions after this and i get the error:
arm-elf-gcc not found or arm-elf-XXX not found or something like that

EDIT: i got it to fully compile but i got a lot of warnings in the process is this normal (i'm new to this whole Linux thing)

EDIT: i also have no idea how to patch every time i do the patch command it prompts me to enter the File to patch
any help would be great

Post them and I'll tell you if they're bad or not.

Very true. If the OP doesn't tell us what the problem is and/or post the error logs- no one can help.

Ok:
  1. Make sure your build environment and Subversion (SVN) is set up. IIRC, in Ubuntu, the easiest way is to install the metapackage "build essentials" and Subversion.
  2. Get the source tree from rockbox.org with SVN.
  3. Follow the directions here in using rockboxdev.sh to automatically download, patch and install gcc-arm.
  4. Make sure that gcc-arm is in your path (directions in the above documentation).
