I can't argue that they should perform equally, but in practice they don't. It isn't really a fair test because in order to be fair you'd have to isolate just the chipset and keep everything else the same - which can't be done by the consumer. So, what happens in practice is all that really matters, and in practice, the G2 beats the Nexus by 15-20% at similar clock speeds.

The only Quadrant scores I've seen showed the Nexus beating the G2 quite handily in CPU score (while losing overall due to GPU and I/O). However, these were both stock, 1ghz and 800mhz respectively. I'd love to see benchmarks showing the G2 CPU beating the Nexus with both clocked at 1ghz, so that I could examine and isolate what's going on. They're both using the same MP Core and Instruction Set, so at the same clock speed, they're just as fast. Any other difference should be attributed to software.

With Nokia N72 for more than 2 years, screen is a little worn now. But still love it.

Tried to post the pic, but don't know how. Anyone could help me with that?

HTC Desire Z, actually was hoping for a GSM version of Samsung Epic to be out but it seems there won't be and so I've gotten this.

I just now realized what's going on. I use the developer version of Quadrant, whereas most consumers use the free version. The free version reports one overall score, which is NOT a good benchmark. The paid versions give you all 5 scores. Basically, do NOT go off that one Quadrant score, as it is very misleading. Here's a paid version result.

Basically:

CPU: N1 > G2 due to faster CPU
Memory: N1 = G2 (same configuration and memory speed)
I/O = Misleading benchmark that falsely inflates free Quadrant scores, throw this out (Droid X has similar bug on 2.1 inflating it's score, fixed in 2.2 update)
2D: G2 > N1 due to better GPU
3D: G2 > N1 due to better GPU

The inflated I/O (which "games" the Quadrant scores) is what's misleading. Remove that from the two benchmarks, and the N1 gets the higher score. In terms of scoring, the better GPU of the G2 does not offset the faster CPU of the N1. However, in real world results, give me the G2's guts. The extra 200mhz doesn't make that much difference in general tasks (I've underclocked my Incredible to 384mhz and it's still very responsive, plus the G2's CPU has a higher potential overclock), the GPU helps in gaming (try Pocket Legends in a populated area on high settings, Adreno 200 chugs), and the smaller process means better battery life for the G2 at any clock speed.

Fair enough. I'd like to see it clocked to 1Ghz and then benched. I wonder if the CPU scores would then be identical. I do expect that they would be, but who knows?

We'll be finding out soon enough I'm replacing the theoretical benchmarks thread with Quadrant. I'm also doing CPU/GPU benchmarks. I'll be soliciting community support, but will also be acquiring phones from a few sources (as loaners).

The main thing is to differentiate between software. The Dalvik JIT compiler added to 2.2 means that CPU benchmark done on a 2.1 phone and a 2.2 phone is not a fair comparison. Dalvik currently is not hardware accelerated, which is both good and bad for benchmarking. It's good in that 2D/3D scores across 2.1 and 2.2 are comparable. It's bad because once Dalvik does become hardware accelerated, we'll have another OS benchmark split.

It's quite amazing to read this thread and see how far we've gotten in less than 2 years... I have a Desire, and was with a crappy Nokia back then.

I've always been a Nokia fan, first purchased myself a Nokia N71, but after it broke several times the year and got stolen in the end, I bought myself a Nokia 7500 Prism which in contrast to N71 is based on the older, but more stable S40 platform (S60 in 2007 was for no good). So far I've only had 1 freeze during all 3 years I've had it, so I am very satisfied.

I went w/an iPhone 4 - the T-Mobile service tanked, the Moto Defy sucked, and I'll go back to Verizon "IF" they get the iPhone 4 on the 11th of January. Otherwise, I like my choice - and for once the wifey ain't chewing my ear off over having a "crappy" phone - she LUVS IT!!!

Agreed I seriously doubt Apple will allow this but we'll see. She's not the only one I do to but the reception....on the contrary you get a phone that works effortlessly no bugs, no all of sudden shut-downs. My Evo was my worst enemy period, so overall I'm cool.

It's all about what suits you best - especially w/the sweet Motorola Atrix & Bionic about to hit. Both of those toast the iPhone IMO - but I'm quite pleased w/the overall device and operation. Now, I just wanna go back to Verizon for the guaranteed service I'll get while traveling up to upstate NY and Canada.

Agreed I am also pleased just for them to be able to push out products that are smooth and effortless that gets points for me. I'm a sucker for ease of use and reliability more points for Apple. Never have I personally had my phone do anything weird. My Hero had a mind of it's own.
