Is this possible or too risky? Any success stories?

The hardware is different. Can't be done.

you can put R firmware on non R players. I accidentally did it when un-bricking my player after the 1.03.01H firmware bricked it. Just use the recovery instructions for Rhapsody models found on this forum.

Actually it IS possible if you have a V1

It is possible, but you still cant use Rhapsody channels and this would be one of the only reasons for switching.
