Depends on what cowon your talking about? My A2 and A3 can play all the avi's that I've thrown at them without having to convert them. On the other hand, the Cowon D2 can play avi but the res has to be 320x240.

I use d2video to downsize my videos. Although I used it for video on my zen, its what alot of people use for their D2's.

320x240 isnt the only criteria. It has to be xvid, and the audio has to be mp3 at 128 kbps CBR

Why not use jet audio that ships with the d2? It works fast and does good quality convertion.

I concur, JetAudio does a surprisingly good job. The presets for the D2 churn out more than acceptable video, so unless you're the type that gets very picky about manual conversion it should do the trick.

I use D2video, but JetAudio does the job fairly decent as well (albeit very slow and not enough tweaks, like crop/scale/direct-audio).
