I want a totally new, original game designed just for the Samsung P2. It should use every bit of processing power in the P2, Bluetooth for something, the microphone for something, and if it occasionally uses a little FM radio then more power to it!
Many years ago I wrote a 3D maze program. I wrote it in BASIC. It ran on DOS machines. The computer would generate a maze with 60x60 cells. You could plop yourself into it anywhere, and the goal was to find your way to an edge exit. Some cells are stairs, and if you find a stair and enter it you are taken down or up to another level (unique maze) where the exit may be found. You could call up a map to see parts of the maze you had passed through. Retracing your steps you can see if a cell you are entering has previously been occupied by you (breadcrumbs). Given the Bluetooth, Touch screen, microphone, etc., of the P2, a unique version of this maze game might be possible. Using Bluetooth and playing with another P2, it would be possible to find a "transporter" cell in the maze. This cell would be glowing blue, and if you entered it you would be transported to a maze residing on the other P2. The player on the other P2 might bump into you, and if that happens he can agree to give you all his maze knowledge (or not), in which case you can see a 2D map of where HE had been in his own maze. Any players playing a maze on YOUR P2 can be watched, verbally coached (using the microphone) which transmits your hints, cautions, lies, or insults over Bluetooth to the home P2 of the player. The real exit may exist on any one of the P2s networked together. Finding it may require roaming up or down levels, across to another P2, down or up levels, back to a unique spot in your maze, etc. The P2 is a media player, so media ought to be part of the maze. You might see pictures from your P2 collection on a random maze wall. There will be dead ends in the maze, but you might find a bench where you can rest and listen to one of your MP3s before moving on. Some rooms may contain books. Entering that room opens up the book reader with either a random or specific txt file from your P2's collection. Close it and you're back in the maze. There could even be a secret room (one that you could only enter going backwards, for example) that would have a radio in it. You could find recorded news broadcasts, or even current FM radio playing in that room. FM would turn off Bluetooth, so anyone entering an FM room would separate all other (Bluetooth connected) players from their home P2's control and dim any Bluetooth transporter cells until the FM room was left. You would only find a FM room when on your own P2's maze. Other rooms might contain maps, which would enable your map view to show more of the maze or other levels. This is very useful to find if you are far from the exit and getting even farther away. Stairs and transporter cells show uniquely on this 2D maze. You could assign a picture of you to be the image one encounters when players meet in the maze. Media you encounter while roaming another P2's maze will be THEIR media. You'll be able to stream it via Bluetooth to your P2 for listening or viewing. If you're lucky to have world subway maps on your P2, the mazes can be generated from those maps. The transporter cells would take you to another city. The music files you find in each city would ideally be stylistically appropriate for that city. Images might be landmarks you'll actually find in that city. FM rooms might use recorded radio, and what plays would be typical of the radio/language you would find in that city. The transporter cell would send you to a random location, so these clues help you figure out where your are, educate you some, and once known would help you maneuver about if you know the city somewhat. The touch screen would be your controller. Swipe upward to move forward into the cell ahead. Draw an arc to the right to make a right turn. Draw an arc to the left for left turns. Swipe down to back up one cell. Turning around requires a half circle swipe. Write an "M" on the screen to see the map. Touch and hold an icon for a second to open a book, song, video, or the radio. Touch a picture on the wall for a second to get a full screen view of it. If associated info is available for/about the picture, a double tap on the picture will reveal it. Finally, a map editor should be included. You can create your own multi-level map or have it randomly generated. You can place media around it. You can move the stairs, transporters, and exits. A good maze might have special music, texts, videos, and photos chosen for their meaning or clues they may add to your voyage or the theme of the maze. You could assign the starting cell for anyone who enters your maze. A player would not just travel through, but the media encountered might tell a story as well. We could then zip up our maze designs with related media and share them on the web. You unzip and copy to your P2 and you can play the maze that someone else created, including encounters with their media. Samsung please give me a call! 4D

In the first figure, I guess, Doom is doomed and the number of games will stay very limited since the interaction through the touchscreen will always be limited. Sad.

Limited, but not impossible. It just takes a creative programmer to design a useful interface with the tools at hand. The P2 also has some external buttons. The vol+ and vol- buttons could be utilized to add game control in conjunction with touches, taps, strokes, arcs, etc., on the screen.

True, by the time the touch interface is responsive enough, you could have fast action games where you could, per example, guide a character on a map through strokes, and use, let's say, extra buttons on the interface, to either shoot, jump, change weapons or seize objects.
But, like you say, it asks for a creative programmer. Hope they have at Samsung. On the other hand (...), the volume buttons might not be that handy to use for a game since there are small and a bit uneasy, to my point of view, to use. I might have too big hands.

I want mini golf & runing!
abaout runing: when race start all you have to do is tap every one second. if you tap faster or slower your runner will go slower. and give bluetooth option and play! it will be cool that they put single and multiplayer sorry on bad english |

4D...use the touch screen to move around...cool idea. Maybe set a "track delay" so you could watch "yourself" moving around the maze that you just traced with your finger. (Would "tracing" be less complicated than gestures?)
I really like the idea of music and/or pic "rooms" to relax and plan out your next bit of strategy! Or sit on a bench to listen to tunes as your pics go by in a slide show. The game aspect of the P2 hasn't gotten too much of my attention in the past but your A-Mazeing-Maze would definitely be a draw!! Are you listening Samsung? I hope so. :-) |

I've got another idea to maximize the P2's features. The bluetooth can now jump from paired devices as you move around your house. When leaving one room and getting out of range the P2 looks for the next strongest signal (your bluetooth speakers in the next room) and starts sending signal to them.
So in my next game "Treasure Hunt" the bluetooth needs to be able to play a DIFFERENT audio file or show a picture, movie or text file based on what it pairs with. You use the voice recorder to create an audio clue. Listening to the P2 as you walk about at some point you come into range of a paired device. The P2 doesn't connect to it, but rather uses it's ID as a trigger to start playing an audio clue to where the next clue will be. That ID can also trigger a certain image or video to appear on the screen. Whatever it is will be a clue to go find the next clue to the where the treasure is. Following the clue you find the next clue when the P2 detects another bluetooth ID. Perhaps your next clue requires comparing items you see around with a select set of pictures on the P2. You pick the picture that matches the item you were to find and you then get the next clue as an audio, video, or text file. Pick the wrong picture and you still get a clue, but it will be misleading. You build the treasure map using pictures, videos, descriptions, and audio recording of items around your house or the larger treasure site. Clues can be triggered by sensing bluetooth IDs, your selection of a picture, or voice input. Perhaps you're clue is to find the farthest flower from where you are but still in the yard. Once you think you've found it you say it's name into the P2. The P2 compares what you say to it's expected input and if the word "Rose" you said is a match you get another clue. At some point you gather enough clues to be able to work out the final location of the treasure. By this time you've seen pictures, listened to audio clues, watched video clues, read text clues, etc. The assorted bluetooth devices around the house/garage have initiated clues. You might have watches a video titled "rhymes with" of a flock of sheep, only to get a bluetooth trigger when you approach the family Jeep (with bluetooth). Only your imagination limits how difficult and tricky the treasure hunt is. The P2 is the Key, though, for without it no one even knows a treasure exists. What might the treasure be? If kids play, perhaps some inexpensive toys. Give the game to grownups and the treasure might hide in the wine cellar. Just a thought. ![]() (c)4DThinker 4/21/2008 @6:37 PM U.S. central time. |

I do a low tech version already when I put on a party on my rear deck. Much simpler. Given first clue on a card. Use clue to find next clue. Each clue card has a couple of letters that combined spell the location of the treasure. You have to find all the clues, then decode from the letters what that location is.
There could also be a low tech way, but still using the P2. You get text clues from the p2. You figure out the clue, then select a picture from an array. The picture has to be something you found using the last clue. Pick the right picture and you get another text clue. Text clues might be like "Follow the stone wall to the north end". The pictures might include peonies, which you'll find at the north end of the wall. Tap on the picture of peonies and you get another text clue. The letter "P" might be one of the letters in the location of the treasure. Final clue may be "Plastic bench". Feel free to substitute audio for text clues. 4D |

That would be awesome! Maybe if Samsung would take us seriously, we could probably create a gadget ultimately better than the iphone and itouch. 4D has all the ideas though...
It was just an inner thought. ![]() -Ravagence

Another P2 game idea:
Any card based multiplayer game. Bluetooth links players. One P2 initiates the game and that P2 becomes dealer keeping track of the deck(s) and cards already played. Touch screen allows selecting cards to play (and bet amount if a gambling game). Each player is prompted when it's his turn. All can see every public play. Sit around the same table or play with other P2 users in the same lunchroom or waiting area, as far as 30 feet away each. All for fun unless players agree to play for real money. Blackjack, Poker, Spades, Hearts, you name it. All packaged as "Card Games", to share the same card graphics and bluetooth link engine. Game creator made available so rule sets can be created for new games and then added to the P2' Card Game set. 4D. (c) 4dthinker 4/29/2008 |

Chuzzle!
It would be perfect for the P2. Slide rows sideways/up-n-down...cake for a designer! |

I would think some thing like marble madness, but I don't think that would work with the touch screen. A game kind of the sort of paths, http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/paths, might be a simple idea, but I would play it. Also a Tetris game (which I think is a repeated comment) would be awesome. But ultimately I think something like Pinball (also, a repeated comment) would make the best game on the P2. Some ideas for controls would be having a left side tap be the control for the left "flicky majigy" (not sure what it's called) and a right side tap controls the right "flicky majigy" (STILL not sure what it's called).

There used to be a memory game called "Simple Simon" by Milton Bradley which had four colored lights. It would play a tone sequence, lighting up a light with each tone. After it played you would have to play back the tone sequence by tapping on the lights in the same order. The sequences would get one note longer after each successful playback. Players could take turns trying to work up to more and more complicated sequences.
A P2 version could use the touchscreen. Start out with it divided into four rectangles. Play simple four note sequences, each growing a little longer. Tap on the colored rectangles to play back the sequence. When the player finished one 4 note challenge level, the screen could change to 6 rectangles, then 8, then 13 (a piano keyboard layout.) the tone sequences evolve into actual melodic tunes, as the longer they get the easier they will be to remember as tunes instead of random tones. MIDI sequences could be used as a compact way of storing the tone/tune sequences. You then could download more tunes to play with the game. Might be a good way to teach basic piano playing. When the songs get complicated, each single light on the screen actually plays a chord. Play back the wrong note and you get the wrong chord, but play it back in the right sequence and you might have a very rich harmonic song experience. Bluetooth Networked other players could challenge each other. Each would get a simultaneous start notice, and the one who succeeded in getting to the top or each level would get the win. Other players games would stop and they would be notified of losing. (c) 4DThinker May 3, 2008. |
